actually cars on trademe are cheap compared to the cars you would buy from a dealership

I'd search around at car yards or trademe or t&e :)

Trademe can be dodgy but before you buy go and look at the car

Remember if your wanting a mint car for hte price you want to pay you have to be prepared to travel :)

Well you can import them, but they can't be complied for onroad use.

Oh, also my advice would be to stay away from early Evo's, unless you have alot of money spare. They will all have had a complete caning by now, and they're quite good at turning into smoke machines with high k's = need a rebuild.

also evo 1,2,3 fetch good $$ as many peoples still like them etc. So you "might" even find evo 4 cheaper than the older models!?

Yes you might.

Non registerable e1/e3's are around 6 to 8K,

registerable ones are 13-20K.
That shows that is the I want one factor that's keeping there price up.

E4's are 14 to 20K also.

I owned an E1 rs for a few years. They make good road cars if you dont get carried away with them.

Good luck on finding a 3, bugger all of them around and they tend to hold there value - try to get him to buy one (if there's any around) that hasn't been modified, hopefully an unmodified one wil have been thrashed less and probably not been "launched" ever. Although there drivetrains are reasonably strong you still want one that has had the least abuse. Um other than that just look for all the usual car stuff, oh and double check the roof on it, alot and i mean a hell of a lot of them sucumbed to rusty roof generally needing the roof to be replaced, bit of a bugger but only a problem in the early models

And that was mainly a problem on the dark coloured ones too.

I have imported 2 cars through a friend that has been importing for years. A 99 jzx100 Chaser for myself and a 99 GTT Caldina for my brother, you can only import vehicles that were made after 1996 if you want them to be road legal or you can import commercial vehicles and older vehicles (almost classic, not sure what the latest model is before they are un registerable). If you do find a car make sure it is in good condition and fairly common for parts etc. I got both cars on the road but my Chaser was a headache and sat in my mates workshop for about 3 months trying to find a few parts where as the GTT went straight through almost. Do your homework and remember that once you've bought it and it's on its way you can't send it back.

i dont have the exact probs on a list, im sure there very easy to find on the net

but,

after the evo 3 mitsi decided to flip the gbox(i think or sumthing in the driveline) around to the opposite side, obviously this was the first time and the evo 4 driveline is much weaker than the 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

check the net youll see 8)

look at the engines on 1s,2s,3s they are all mounted on the opposite side off the enigne bay to 4s, 5s, 6s ,7s, 8s, 9s

which means the gbox had to be flipped over to the other side, thus making the evo 4 a sort of test dummy 8)

You do know why they did that aye?? And the motor is turned 180 as well if you look closely oh wait actually if you just look at it you see that.
I'l even give you a hint was aimed at trying to stop the front end lifting under acceleration, jury is still out on if it worked as well as planned or not  So not really a crach test dummy for them as they had been doing transfer cases boxs etc for a long time before the evo 4, a transfer case is a transfer case and a box is a box, doesn't really make much difference which way the gears a spinning inside them. I haven't heard of to many people blowing 4 boxs/ ransfer cases to pieces maybe your mates are just animals. Side stepping the clutch at least once a week will destroy just about any box/transfer case eventually tho

I thought the main problem with the 4's was the Active Yaw Control..

yea mate i relsied the engine was flipped around, that was just the way i explained it, ok so what would you call the first of a kind? i bet you evo 3's and 5's have better drivelines than 4's.
