I had to get up Stuart Street right from the bottom when it was all fresh in an EE100. Commodore bouncing off the kerb halfway up as we crept past him. Need a decent dump of it. Pity I couldn't get to work and get the Starlet :(

Well after the Mrs and I went to Chch for a shopping day, we hit the kilmog at ~8pm on Sunday night... snow was settling at the bottom where they the gate thing is, the guy with the ute and the flashing light was just about to close it so I swerved passed, and up the hill we went. going up was fine except for a few idiots who were either driving too fast, and skidded off into the ditches, or too slow, and getting stuck. About half way up I hit single wheel spinning, and eventually it stopped, so hit the magical "SNOW" button, which I'm not really sure what it does, but I'm guessing it does some sort of LSD with the diff, atleast thats what it appears to do, and we were away again.

INSERT ->the first few hits on google suggests it just forces it to take off in second, and makes the gear transitions much smoother, I still say it seemed like an LSD.

The snow was about 15cm at the top of the kilmog, and trailed off quickly, plenty of idiots sitting in ditches, including two WRXs that looked like they had been going a tad too fast... young guys, obviously thought that 4wd is bullet proof.

On the way to Christchurch yesterday in the Mazda (MS-6, front wheel drive, hatchback, V6 with not enough power) we saw snow everywhere, but most had been melted, as we left at about 9:30am. Brother took the below pics as i was driving.

ImageDid the handbrakeys, as mentioned below, on the other side of this hill.

It was the first time i've ever driven in snow. As we were following cars going way too slow down the four lane hill thing (where the road goes straight across the valley after it used to curve all around it, and where the 'wind gust' warning signs are - on the other side of the hill from the last pic above) i decided to have a bit of fun in the snow, so drove into the stuff on the side of the road that no-one else had driven on and proceeded to pull the handbrake.

Didn't think it worked (no sound or anything) until i felt the back end getting out a bit. So drove up a bit further and did it again, this time getting way more sideways (fun! :D). It is so weird though, you pull the handbrake on and don't notice a thing, there's no jolt and no feeling that the back tyres are locked until you feel the back of the car sliding out. Quite cool. 8)

I didn't do it again after that because as we were approaching the part of the road that goes right over the valley we saw a tow truck on the other side of the road with a police car pulling up behind it. As we got closer we could see a Nissan Primera right behind the truck and it had a fair bit of damage on the front (like it had gone down the hill too fast, understeered and slid on the snow, hit the bank and gone down the ditch).

It was also completely burnt out. 8O So it was possibly an American import Primera...

Snow = fun. 8)

Oh and from Christchurch to Dunedin it took me about exactly four hours doing 110 most of the way (because i didn't want to be driving all morning, and we were lucky to see one car/truck every half hour). Including a petrol stop in Timaru.
Left at roughly 9:30pm and got into the Dunedin area at about 1:30am (got home at 1:55am).

Man I pity you all with cars :P
Went all the way up Mt cargill after Whare Flat wasn't challenging enough and even then Mt Cargill was too easy, I owe it to my new 4WD tyres on the Terrano tho they were great in the snow.
All in all it was some fun.
I can imagine all you lot out in the rear skidders :)
