180sx Update

Postby Vickrin » Fri Jun 02, 2006 11:22 pm

Thought i'd update you lads on how my car is coming along.

The engine is at E&S, has been torn down and ready to be put back together.

It has ACL 1mm oversize forged pistons.
ARP rod bolts.
Copper head gasket.
Shot peened crank and rods.
Block bored out to 84mm bore.
Head completely rebuilt.
Ports tidied up.
New valves.
New equal length stainless manifold and downpipe.
New GT2860RS turbo.
440cc injectors.
New clutch which is as of yet undecided.

All im waiting on is the clutch, once i have that can get the bottom end balanced and chuck it back in the car and get the old girl back on the road.

I used to think that owning a 1.3L corolla would be fine but its driving me nuts. At least its manual, if it was auto i would be going dead set f*ing nuts.

Nobody wants to buy a cheap cheap runabout aye ? $1k ?

Anyways dudes, wish me luck for the clutch search.

Yeah, CA18DET.
Planning on running it on around 18psi when fully run in and tuned.
Hoping for around 260-280hp.

As an ex-180sx owner myself, I think thats' awesome, it'll sure stonk!

I'm a bit curious though, as to why you chose to modify the CA, as opposed to spending less money, and just going SR? Your power figures would be easily achievable with a near-standard SR, as well as having more torque..

Have you got any pics of the 180?

I did some research and i just have no love for the SR, i could have hit that power in standard CA as well but my pistons were shot so i replaced them.

An SR is around $3000 these days for a good one with gearbox which could just be spent on the CA.
The CA to me is a better engineered engine.

Also im not worried about massive power. Its mainly response cause it is just a street car.

If i put a 2L into it then it would be a 180sx anymore, would be a 200sx

(maybe not) True that.

So how much is this all going to sting ya? I have to spend over $4,000 to get my Nissan working again (gearbox, tyres and repairs).

Err.. what? The model number doesn't have anything to do with the powerplant, I had a NZ new RS13 200sx (yes, thats' where I got my nick from!) that was CA18-powered, and (Jap) 180sx's started coming out with SR20's from day dot, to the SR20 Type-X and n/a Type-S, which ended production in 1997. So its' possible to have a 180sx with both Jap-spec CA18, and NZ-spec CA18. The 200sx was mainly for the UK and NZ markets, but it appears that there were some Jap models made with the SR20DET. Early Jap 180/200sx's also had HICAS as an option, whereas the NZ/UK/US models didn't.

The NZ-new 200sx only came with CA18, (this is also identical to the UK-spec model) and had a 240km/h clock. The USDM 180sx was called a 240sx, due to the fact that it was powered by the 2.4L soch KA24E.

I too like the CA18, but as with any other motor, it has its' problems. They are reknowned for shitting headgaskets due to a bad head design, if you're going for a copper headgasket, it would be wise to spend the extra money and o-ring the block, if you're looking to run big boost.. which is probably what your plan would be judging by your choice of turbo!

Good job, though. :)

Whats' wrong with the Skyline, Mustang-Man?

The whole 180SX/200SX/240SX/Silvia thing has always kinda confused me a little. I think i finally know the difference between Silvia K's and Silvia Q's now though (one is turbo and the other isn't?).

And Skyline has following problems;
- Gearbox whine (possibly bearings - $3,000 or so to get the whole box restored to better than factory condition)
- Three tyre types on wheels (should only be one - so want to get four new grippy tyres)
- Needs tune up
- Exhaust leaks
- Front right tie rod end needs replacing
- Front brake pads worn (funny, i've only driven about 1,500 km's since the last WoF)
- Front lights out of alignment
- Front lights problem (sometimes don't turn on, to do with the contact points on the switch in the dash)
- Front driveshaft has a bit of play in it (transmits power to the front wheels)
- Back stoplight too 'white'

And i think there's a couple of other problems too. Only been driven once since Febraury 26th.

Hah, yep, Silvia K's is turbo, Q's is non turbo, and Aces' (S13 only!) is n/a SR20, manual only, with factory extractors, bigger turbo brakes and LSD.

Regarding the Skyline.. maybe time to sell? If it were mine, I'd get a box from the wreckers, get it going, and sell it.. Or maybe convert it to rwd/5spd? It would be a shame to sell it, but if its' gonna cost more than half what the car is worth to fix it.. its' a hard call, isn't it? I've been in your position many times before!

So your rebuilding a auto box stang mang? Why?

K = Kings (turbo) and Q = Queens (N/A). I thought that was funny.

Sweet, might check out Wikipedia then. :)

RE the car: Mainly because in the long run it will probably be cheaper (the long, loooooooong run that is ;)) and because i want to keep the original gearbox in it. The guys said they can fix it better than it left the factory by removing all the bugs etc that they had.

All the money i spend on the car i will never get back because i never intend to sell it. I'm not woirried about the value of the car either (probably somewhere below $6,000 at the moment).

If i had the money i'd have a freaking huge warehouse full of every single different model of Skyline i could get (race cars included). It is a goal of mine to at least get one of every R32 model.

Yes, i am crazy.

Just buy a second hand box and get it serviced. Find one with a nice clean pan and it'll probably be right for ages and be a fair bit cheaper. Whats involved in the recon of the auto? Might be able to get it done a bit cheaper for you. Likewise with tyres, unless you know someone of course

And dont be one of those people that goes "but it passed its last warrent with those brake pads". Those are bad stupid people ;)

Haha, go the GXi! (FR32!) Huge 90hp of fury.. which is half the power of a GTS, with the same weight.. kinda makes you wonder why they even bothered putting a 4cyl into an R32.. :?
