ST215 3SGTE Manual Gearbox & Diff Oils

Postby BZG Wagon » Tue Oct 11, 2011 11:31 am

After trawling the net for weeks and recieving many differing opinions on what should go in a gearbox and diffs, Toyota have confirmed the following:

We have consulted with our Japanese technical specialist and can now advise:

For this Toyota Caldina, with model code is ST215W-DWMZZ, the vehicle has E150 5-speed transmission and EF1AV transfer.

The recommended gear oil is API GL5, SAE75W-90. (Reference: 5.2L)

And the vehicle is 4WD, so there is rear differential gear.

Recommended gear oil is API GL5, SAE75W-90. (Reference: 0.9L)

We trust this information will be helpful, and we thank you for this opportunity to be of assistance.

Does someone want to make this a sticky in FAQ's?

Nice find, gear ratios would be good too!

If it's an E150F then I believe the ratios should be the same as the ST185 (since it's the same gearbox code). Surprising, wonder why they didn't use the E154F from the ST205?

Hmm... We just brought a st215 engine and gearbox to put in a st185 and were under the assumption that the diff ratios were different, and i got told on here there not as strong as the st185 box's.

Yeah its the same box, E154 out of ST205's was the one with closer ratios afaik

there's an easy way to work out the ratios if you have the box, you'll need one hand, at least one eye, some sort of marker like a twink pen, and the ability to count to at least 4 ;)

You can get a better idea of gear ratios if you take off the end cover of the gearbox (where 5th year lives) so you can count rotations of the input and output shafts.

If it's anything like the ST165, ST185 and ST205 boxes, the front diff is a 1:1 ratio, so comparing rotation of the output shaft of the gearbox to rotation of the front driveshafts will give you the centre diff (final drive) ratio.

On the GT-Four boxes, from the centre diff you actually have a torque reduction (i.e. speed increase or what would be considered a gear ratio of less than 1), which is the exact opposite of the rear diff ratio - this means that from your centre diff to your rear diff the effective ratio is still 1:1 to match the front diff. In other words, from centre diff you have a ~2.9:1 ratio, then the prop-shaft to the rear wheels, then the rear diff is ~1:2.9. So, to make sure it's compatible with your rear diff, you want to make sure the ratio of the front driveshaft rotation to rear prop-shaft rotation is the same between your old and new boxes (lock the gearbox so it doesn't turn when checking this)

I'm sure that's all clear as mud

From Richard Doig's website http://gtfour.supras.org.nz/gearboxpics.htm it would appear the ST205 has the same 1st and 2nd as the ST185 but taller 3rd and 4th then the same 5th.
