They're also engineered with tollerance in mind - flywheels that are too light compromise strength and therefore flywheels that are "light enough" and made from a suitable alloy are what you need!
The lighter weight also means that engines rev up and down quicker which, for people that like this, means you can control engine performance a little more precisely.
