How can cams not work?
Perhaps a Apexi SAFC to tweak the fuel and ignition curves, and perhaps a bit of port tidying up, with new cams and cam gears, and ditch the VVT.
If you've still got the factory extractors, change them for some different styled ones, should make a difference in itself.
Or for better results, an aftermarket computer which will allow you to ditch the AFM will help too.

Cams will work with VVT, just depends on how wild you want to go, as if you go to wild they won't work well with the vvt system. For cam gears you can do the exhaust only unless you ditch the vvt as it's pretty hard to make an adjustable wheel up for running vvt. One good advantage of removing the vvt is the oil feed to it can be re routed into the head for extra camshaft oiling. You can do away with the vvt system if need be it's not a major. If you change cams you'll probably need to change valve springs as the factory springs are marginal at the best of times for anything wilder than standard. Porting will gain a lil bit but not a great deal. Fcatory extractors on these engines aren't that bad & apart from going to a full on custom built 4-2-1 or 4-1 system with a merge collector etc I doubt you'd gain much. I wouldn't waste money on a SAFC or similar as you can go full aftermarket with the likes of a Microtech for $1300+fitting(do it yourself) & tuning, as this way you can get the full gains from more load zones etc to have finer control of fuel/ignition.

There is always a handful of small things you can try on a good dyno to gain the odd KW here or there, like different mufflers, different tips on the end of the exhaust(megaphones etc), different exhaust lengths etc but unless you seriously chsing the last few bits of power these are the expensive & time consuming KW's. For more advice talk to REDMIST as he's probably got more experience than me, I've only built a 20V or two.
