What sort of increase will these mods give??

Postby Farmer_dave » Wed Aug 27, 2003 8:11 pm

I know there isnt an exact answer to this question but I was just after a rough idea of kw increase and seat of the pants increase, I am thinking of doing a couple small mods to the GT-T once the warrenty runs out.
Got to make it competative against my mates Sub GTB

Big Bore exaust

Pod filter

Turbo boost regulator (only wind a up the boost a small amount)

what other cheap mods are there??
any input would be apreciated

May get 5-20hp from the exhaust, depending on the quality and whether the cat is stuffed or not (get it replaced if it is stuffed - no performance increase removing it)

Air filter, anywhere from -10 to +10, depending on how its fitted 8O
You want to make sure that if you do it, you feed it nice cold air - a cold air box is preferable

Boost controller type gadget will give easy power, but check out what other GT-T owners have done - you may find you can wind in 12-14psi, then above that the fuel computer initiates a "safety boost" feature (4psi for a 300ZX) or fuel cut - get a boost gauge for accuracy
Don't tell anyone, but I bought a Corolla so I could beat some Hondas on TvH days :P

I think most 3SGTE owners seem to agree removing the cat and fitting an appropriate downpipe can definetly yield a performance increase..... especially so at higher boost settings. The problem with the Gen4 3SGTE's if I recall correctly is that the exhaust manifold and downpipe is cast together or something equally crazy, therefore replacement could become complex. This doesn't stop you 'gutting' the cat however.

If the factory airbox is like the ST205s and Gen3+ MR2s the design is pretty good with a nice bellmouth feeding the main box. Unless you can devise a nice cold air setup for a pod, you might be best leaving it.

Lastly, factory boost is about 14psi and putting a freeflowing exhaust will likely increase this a few psi, so this is where most of your 'power' gains will come from.... with a gutted cat and a freeflowing exhaust you may find no need for a boost tap or controller :)

i have no cold air box and have had a pod filter recently installed in my 3sgte, and it has made a big difference, still havin a few problems with my boost controller though. and the cat should be right off the turbo, cant afford to do the exhaust yet ($1500 it got quoted at- thats with a new downpipe) but better doin it properly :)
Look at this guys, he's and idiot, hes 7 feet pure idiot, you put his brain in a parakeet zing fly backwards

Define "cheap"

Front mount intercooler
ECU
Cams
Theres heaps you can do ... and none of that has even touched the turbo yet :D

Cold air makes a HELL of a difference. Just has to be set up correctly. My mates MR2 had one done just recently ... can't believe the difference it makes! My own cold air system (done by someone on this forum) is brilliant ... induction noise is superb, and the low- to mid-range pull is significantly stronger.

Cold air + fmic would be one hell of a combo for a hot running engine like a 3sgte

So how much did it cost you to get your cold air and pod filter set up?

where did you or your friend get it done??

Would the set up be good for 4age blacktop as well??

Thx
