TRD Cams

I have recently bought a FXGT Limited (couldn't resist the power window thing)
It turned out to be a bit of a lemon! but there is a bright side to every engine running really bad compression when it theoretocally shouldn't! After opening the cam covers only to find TRD Cams installed very badly im thinking.
the car seems to be plauged with problems i have replaced the engine but want to put the cams in as im running very large injectors and there is not by far enough air getting in with the fuel
Question is it was running standard Buckets and Shimms, was this the reason why the engine is f~%^ed? and if so Does anyone have any idea of what sort of arrangement i could replace them with?
It might have been running bigger Valve springs but does any one know of where i could get the spring's compared to normal ones in Christchurch?

To get the valve springs checked/compared try kelfods or else any good engine builder(more than likely it'd need to be a race engine builder) should have some way of checking valve spring pressures. Else just compared the number of coils/wire diametere & you should get some idea.

Running standard buckets & shims may have been the problem but without knowing the specs of the cam it's hard to say. To remedy it, if this is the problem you'd have to swap to a shim under bucket setup which will stop the valve shim from getting thrown out of place when the engine is under load.

It could also be that the cams were installed but not timed correctly as well which could lead to many problems. Best ebt is probably to take the springs/cams to Kelfords & get the springs compared/checked & get them to Cam Doctor the cams if you don't know the specs so then you have some idea of where the should be timed & go from there.

Or maybe they installed the cams but diddnt set the tappets.
a couple of hours and up to $160 later ($10 a shim) you might have yourself a screamer.
Or you could drop in some standard cams in and sell the trd cams to me

Cams aren't something you want to casually throw at an engine.
Depending on spec you may need bigger injectors, which will require a aftermarket ECU to drive correctly.
Valve springs are fully dependant on the duration and lift, and you should look at high quality springs to cater to a good set of cams.
Depending on lift you may also require a shim under bucket solution. Kelfords do a modification to valves, shims and buckets which are a lighter solution than the TRD shim under bucket and seems to work well. Should cost you around 2k, but much cheaper than the TRD solution.
And then of course you need a set of verniers to set the cam timing right....
dyno time in order to prove they are right and set that adjustable ECU correctly.
Not cheap to do it correctly.
