couple of questions on DIY jobs

Postby 2fas4u » Tue Apr 20, 2004 9:57 pm

hi all, if you have read my post in the lower north island/wellington sectioned you would have known that my licence has been suspended for six months so now i have plenty of time to do mods on my car (90' toyota mr2 sw20 n/a). now i got a couple of questions on DIY jobs as i know that high cost in vehicle upgrade and maintainance usually gets steep at the labour part so i wanna keep cost to minimum if possible.

here it goes:

1/ if you change brake pads do you need to replace brake fluid?

2/ is it good to have different size tyres at front and rear, i currently have 205/r50/16 at the front and 225/r50/16 at the rear, or should all tyres be the same size?

3/i was told by a different person who i went on a cruise with that my clocking sound coming from the front, mainly right hand side of the car was that the springs needed abit adjusting? that make sense and if so, how do i do that?

4/ thinking of replacing driver's side and passenger's side door locks with solex, but how do i take the old factory lock out? does it requring removing all the internal door panel?

5/ my wing mirrors seem to shake a wee bit while the car is sitting there idle at the traffic light so i thought the screws were loose underneath so i got one of those screwdrivers from repco that is the right fit and try to tighten it but infact teh screws weren't lose ar all, any ideas?

6/thinking of replacing my factory toyota clutches with racing clutches so just wondering how much are new racing clutches? where to get them done properly in wellington?

cheers for any help you can give me and your precious time in advance :)

i havent done it on this sort of car but itll be pretty much the same you have to remove the door linning and then its just a case removeing a clip that slips in behind the back of the lock and undoing the wires that conect to the locks. put the new lock in and hook them all back up done takes about 10 min

Don't have to, but you may as well
2/ is it good to have different size tyres at front and rear, i currently have 205/r50/16 at the front and 225/r50/16 at the rear, or should all tyres be the same size?

YES! MR2's need larger rear rubber! Factory sizes are something like 195/60/14F and 205/60/14R

3/i was told by a different person who i went on a cruise with that my clocking sound coming from the front, mainly right hand side of the car was that the springs needed abit adjusting? that make sense and if so, how do i do that?

Nah springs dont need to be adjusted, it could be a worn bush in that strut, hard to say without hearing it
4/ thinking of replacing driver's side and passenger's side door locks with solex, but how do i take the old factory lock out? does it requring removing all the internal door panel?

Yep, you'll need to take the door trim off compkletely, it isn't hard at all...getting the lock out could be a tad tricky though
5/ my wing mirrors seem to shake a wee bit while the car is sitting there idle at the traffic light so i thought the screws were loose underneath so i got one of those screwdrivers from repco that is the right fit and try to tighten it but infact teh screws weren't lose ar all, any ideas?

Pretty sure there are screws inside the door to tighten em, you'd have to pop off the tweeter mount to have a looksee
6/thinking of replacing my factory toyota clutches with racing clutches so just wondering how much are new racing clutches? where to get them done properly in wellington?

Depends how full on you wanna go...a full paddle type clutch (which would be complete overkill for your car) will set you back around $800+...a decent heavy duty one will be more like $300+...shop around for soem quotes. Don't know any good mechs in welly sorry.
