Creaking/knocking noises from front left

Postby aesc » Fri May 07, 2004 11:58 am

Ok got these noises coming from the front left (can kinda tell noise is coming from under the front passengers feet) somewhere in the suspension setup, its like theres a creaking noise when i go over bumps and when im turning theres a light knocking noise. Im thinking its the sway bar bush on the left side as the sound is coming from that area but where the bracket that holds the sway bar bush on the left side is, theres the front lower suspension arm that is bolted underneath the car at the same point as the sway bar bush bracket.

My question is, is it the sway bar bushes, or has the bushing inside the suspension arm worn out at the fixing point?

BTW, its an AE101 with Super Strut

the superstrut arm is where the frong 'leg' of the strut joins the lower control arm. the strut bolts to the top of the hub, then an extra arm goes forward and drops down to join the lower control arm about halfway along. the join is made by a balljoint mounted on a very short arm which connects to the lower control arm by a pivot/balljoint.
you normally have to replave the whole arm. i can do new genuine ones for $250inc gst

I think I have pics of this, is that part no 48605-12190? If so, im sure its not that as ive already had that part recond twice now and it never made those noises when it was stuffed.

Warwick you probably know, could it be ARM SUB-ASSY, FRONT SUSPENSION, LOWER NO.2 LH (part no 48069A) making the noises, or the sway bar bushes? Or maybe sway bar links?

id be inclined to say that its more lickly to be the arms instead of the sway bars....
you could try spraying a bit of crc around.
do one joint at a time and you maybe able to figure out which one it is. otherwise off to the garage you go....

Is that the part you were talking about? Coz I was told that thats the part thats always get worn out. If it is, dont get it recondition, buy a brand new one, it might last longer.

That's my website :) Your first link doesn't work though.

Best bet is to buy new parts from Mr. Revhead - reconditioned parts don't last and buying new means you get the arm and the ball joint on the front as one unit.

Good old Superstrut huh, sam thing happened on my GTZ at exactly 100,000k's, seems like that's the life of this part.
Same symptoms too, knocking and creaking.

You can only tell when there is weight on the wheels, if you put it up on a hoist held by the body you can't find the loose parts making the noise.

Over a pit or drive-on / ramp hoist get under the car and grab (#48068 RH, #48069 LH) http://www.geocities.com/fxgt20/superstrut.htm
give it a good tug back and forward and you can see exactly where the noise is coming from, that part # above.

In 2000 brand new from TNZ was $500 each side, don't know what they are now, also re-conditioned ones could be good for a try, depending on the price. Bonus is that they are pretty easy to fit yourself, or only a hours labour for a mechanic.

Cheers!

It better not be that f***n part its been recond twice in the last 18 months and ive only done 15,000kms! Ill be in contact Warwick about a genuine one if thats it, should be able to sneak it in before my warranty runs out.

I actually had a look underneath last night, has spat grease from it into the wheel arch area.

What is causing this to happen so often? Would a wheel alignment help?

I'd be jacking the front left up and checking the wheel for movement. If there's grease under there that looks new, check the hub or shock is still in one piece!

just about to say that
i would personaly check out your wheel bearing first cause if that goes you will be pay mr revhead a whole lot more money
the best way to do this with out taking the car apart is to jack which eva side up grab a hold of the spring and spin the wheel if u can feel a crap load of vibration wel yes its ur wheel bearing
but put some rubber greese on all your suspension bushsthere prob dry

I kinda eggegerated the grease thing. Its obvious from looking that it has come from that ball joint and theres not much of it anyway. As for hubs, wheel bearings, struts cv boots etc im sure theyre all sweet
