It isn't illegal to alter the odometer reading. However it is illegal to sell a car and imply that it has traveled less distance than it actually has.

Back to the original topic, why dont you just buy an hour meter? They have come in handy for a few mates with diesels for oil changes etc :D

i assume this law against it is only for winding it back so it says that it has done less that it really has,
but what about when you do an engine conversion? you would be allowed to wind it to the correct amount for the new engine then?

It is just as illegal to wind it forward.

And read previous posts about wear and tear on the rest of the vehicle.

just wind it to zero and say the old one stopped working so you replaced with a brand new one.

thanx for all your help guys
i think i might just leave the odometer..i dont really wanna get into trouble
on another note, i recieved the rego papers today,
its had 9 owners, doesnt show the kms for 1977, but for 1984 it shows 37781kmshen at 23/8/2003 it shows 58037, and when i changed papers on wednesday (12/5/2004) it still shows 58037kms, i assume thats when the rego was put on hold ?
i dont quite understand what its showing, but the top 5 records are at the same kms. so err..how do i know the real kms of the engine now, he said a new engine was put in, i havent been able to start the car cause it has no rear muffler yet :(..gotta get it welded on..
