will it be difficult to put a blue top head on a rwd 3a

Postby Peradx » Mon May 17, 2004 8:36 pm

Instead of going the hole hog and putting a 4age into my ae85 I`ve decided to put a blue top 4age head onto the 3a block. I`ve brought the loom and computer so far.
What else am i going to need apart from the head.
What problems could i face doing this?

im not sure if it will fit, but if it does you are going to need fuel pump, lines and rwd manifolds aswell. Theres probably more but im tired and can think.

It would be easier to phone around all the Toyota dealers and find a NZ new ae86 that is still brand new and buy that!

Assuming none of the oil galleries etc wernt made larger for the 4age etc it should be doable.
Why not run it on carb's thou?- less hassle (sortov) than wireing up ecu and then ya get that beaut sound too!
Cant believe im still a member here.

Think about the crank and how are you going to drive the cam belt, valve to piston clearance , water jackets , oil feeds, etc, if you did get it to go it wouldn't be long before you had a rod out the side and then at the end of the day why? a 1500 cc twin cam ?

botom end on 4ag resonably light, I imagine 3a is not as good also incorrect fly cuts on pistons probly, dam how much is a blue top worth these days naff all just the rwd bits are expensive. I think it would be way more trouble than its worth.

2a-ge has been done by someone of club-k (thats a 1300 twin cam), didnt really have any trouble i believe, just bolted on as if it were the 4a block.... apparently revved alot harder too...

free is a good price to pay for that head lol as for the intake manifold im not sure but for that price ya want a throttle body reason there worth a bit is cause everyone uses them for 4agze conversions (i think)
theres one here in aucks for $20 but i dunno if its still there

im in auckland

$200 is probly a fair price, the reason a factory rwd 4age intake manifold is rare/expensive cos every time sum one puts a 4age in a dx or a 30 or sumthin you need to buy a buy/make a manifold to suit i guess

Except that if it's a proper rwd manifold it wont fit his head and if it's a fwd it's overpriced

Remember as both engines (3a and 4age) are both 'A' series engines everything should be interchangable and Ive seen it being done before, however minor modifications may be necessary. I was thinking of building a 2age at one stage (2a block with 4age head) for a 1300cc restricted race class.

want good motor ? here it is
3au engine
bluetop crankshaft so you can use the 8bolt flywheel series. Other than that i dont see why the head wont go on ok and belts be fine as its only cyl size difference not stroke. If you run into problems with flycuts on pistons .. you could have a look at a 5afe engine which is 1500 twincam and pistons from that or complete bottom end could suit.

yeah, id say its possible... like putting 2K head on a 4K but much more complex.. probably easier at the end of the day to just drop a 4age straight in but 3age would be more styley :P
