wheel spacers?

any one think they dodgy???

i just put some 15's on my AE86 with 205/50-15 901's and the tyres hit the struts on the front, so i gots a spacer did the same thing, got 2 spacers and it fixed it, anyone think this is dodgy?

As long as your wheel nuts are still getting a decent bite on the studs it'll be sweet, but you'll still have to take em out for warrant time

Most spacers are dodgy because they lessen the amount that the hub sticks out in the centre of brake disk. That bit which protrudes is intended to fit snugly into the wheel and take a lot of the weight of the car. When you fit a spacer that bit may no longer be sticking out, which puts all the weight onto the studs, which they were not originally intended to take. The safer type of spacers will be the thicker kind which have a cutout in the back to locate it with the hub, and then have a raised portion on the front to locate in the centre of the wheel.

legally spacers are meant to be no more than 10 mm wide (the flat plate that just goes over your normal wheel studs) or no more than 25 mm wide (the sort that bolts to your hub and has a set of its own studs which the wheel can bolt to). they all need to be certed.

other problems arise from the fact that you are basically extending your hubs which puts more pressure on things like ball joints and tie rods and all that other fun stuff. that said i've never heard of anyone having problems and i'm planning on using them (the bolt on sort) on my TA23 when i find a decent set of fwd wheels. i think i'd take them out for circuit racing though, that could be a little too much stress.

I have some 5mm spacers made up for my starlet, they are 5mm thick, have 4 holes for the studs and one in the middle for the hub. They also have 1 smaller hole that can be used to bolt the hub of the mag to the spacer. All this is required for a spacer to be certed.

For all the legal hassles and cost (getting certed etc) why not just buy wheels that fit? Would probably be cheaper.
Don't forget if you pull a swifty and swap wheels for warrants, if your car is checked over after an accident you can face some quite serious charges for illegal mods.

swapping the wheels over is no biggy... i work in a tyre shop, ive got a plan tho for now, they are a taper seat nut and i can probably get some taper seat shank nuts and get the bolt holes in the wheels drilled to make them fit, so that gives me a little more thread to play with
