diff strength

Postby z|gen » Wed Jun 30, 2004 5:51 pm

hey..
this should be a pretty simple answer..
but will a standard KE30 diff be strong enough for a worked 4K 5spd ?

yes or no

if no, my KE70 wagon rear end will bolt straight in without to much or no modification and be able to handle it ?

cheers David

You can blow a diff with any amount of power from the way you treat it. It'll be fine as long as you're not vicious with it i.e. 6,000rpm clutch drops, clutch kicks and shift locks. Shift locks are diff killers in my experience.

err...i dont do any of that aye..kind of afraid il either blow something or get snapped by the cops, so my diff should be fine for everyday driving..i dont plan on racing it or anything..more just having the "worked" engine for show rather than go..
and err..whats a shift lock ?

Then you'll be fine with the diff, not totally sure about whether a KE70 diff would fit. But either that or a KP diff should fit.

A shift lock is locking the rear wheels from say 100km/h into 2nd gear so you can slide and then apply power out of a drift.

well.most people would probably say hilux..even though we have a hiace one at work, i cant be bothered putting it back together and then trying to get it to fit..if you have the money, either a hilux or a hiace diff should be sufficient for most modification..

Lockers are pretty strong if you're keen to run one. Otherwise something like a T-series live rear axle with new mounts. It's a bit of a hassle with wagons on account of the leafs of course. I wouldn't bother worrying about it unless you're running something more than a 4AGE or if you're gonna be vicious(see above).

my mate just put an ae86 diff and rear axel assemble onto the leafs in the back of his ke20 behind a 4age, they will be more than strong enough for any 4k powered ride :D
