Hey, what is the best (legal) way of lowering a kp60 2door starlet?

don't want to spend a huge amounts of $$ but anyone got any good options?

Ive been told that a set of Koni shocks is the best for performance and hight (if you dont want to go for that 'sacked' look).
but yeh im looking into fixin that on my starlet aswel

how much you willing to spend?
i can do lowering spring sets from around $380-400

yip thats about what i'm wanting to spend - IF they are of legal hight and captive, what brand are they? i assume they are brand new?

how much do they lower it by ?

i can do TRD, cobra, dobi sport....
having said that TRD no longer list them to old!!
can do cobras for $395 delivered
quoted lowering 25-40mm quite a range but i think they are covering there arses with those numbers... say 30ish mm

Be careful with the rear springs, my car had Gabriel shocks and standard springs were only JUST captive. You can use Commodore wagon rear shocks I think, around 50mm shorter from memory.

hey dude i had dobisons /dobisport in my kp60 and that thing handeled like it was on rails they were from a ka laser

but they fitted sweet azz all captive sat right in the top hats ect

those combined with some 205/50/15"s and nothing could stop it

had cobras and i wouldnt buy them again

in my old kp60 i had a wicked setup, but would have cost over a grand but i didnt pay for the labour, basicly i made new front struts that were designed to ride about 80mm lower than std, looked mean and handled great

were they shortened ?

i had some struts shortened with a spacer and that worked wicked

for that short you'd probably want to actually shorten the body of the strut, not just the strut insert. otherwise suspension travel gets pretty minimal. not hard to do if you can weld, or if you've got a mate who can, as long as you get them pretty close to straight or it might change your camber.

i'd say that something like this would need to be certed legally, whether you'd get picked up on it or not i couldn't say

damn i should have taking some pics we just did my mates ke30 ones(went back in the car yesturday) but yeah basicly what rxtoy said, i shortened the inserts 100mm(i should have only gone about 50 but one of them was slightly damaged so just choped that part right off:) ) then with the body i cut the threaded piece off the top, then cut 50mm off and welded the thread piece back on, there is also another sleave inside(it just slides out) that has to be shortend the same amount, i also put heaver oil in to give it a stiffer ride.

to be legal all the welding and machining etc has to be done by a certed engineer and then the car has to be certed because you altered the strut.

but if its done all nicely and maybe chuck some fresh new paint on the whole strut its blody hard to tell its been done, but usally your doing this because you want your car under 100mm so need cert anyway

Can someone give me a definate yes/no as to if the standard rear shocks in a starlet can be machined? I have been told they can't but a local suspension shop don't see why not, they didn't see they car though so couldn't say for sure.

Anyone done this?

no they can't, if you really want i can come round and show you why

yes they can be machined but only as in your can make anything you want if you reallly want, but for the cost of around $150inc GST you can buy a pair of monroe shocks(i can get you the exact part number) that do the job great, or about 130each for pedders

personly i prefered the ride i got with the monroes

the parts nummber is Monroe 15-3034 you should be able to take this down to any old monroe distributor and they will be able to sort ya out
