3sg/gte questions, for the experts

Postby Mr Revhead » Tue Aug 24, 2004 3:01 pm

a customer of mine is wanting to build a high power 3sge.
hes wanting to know about differences in the blocks. and as im a bit of a noob when it comes to these engines i thought id throw it out to the 'knowledable' toyspeeders 8)

so whats the difference in the blocks between the 3sge and 3sgte and various generations?

is it possible to install the piston squirters on models that dont have the standard by tapping in to the oilways?

which block is reguarded as the strongest, id assume the st205 one, does anyone know for sure?

Theres a thread on the US MR2 OC and it seems 700rwhp+ is where the pre gen4 block fails, but they seem to have remedied that on all 'new' old generation blocks. If its gonna remain naturally aspirated any block will do IMO.

something i heard a while back is oil squirters can be a waste of time. you are better getting the top of the piston ceramic coated. this contains the heat of the combustion process inside the chamber and keeps the skirt of the piston cool and also helps the oil retain its lubricating properties. also the force of the oil acting against the piston on its way down it can slow it down. I doubt it would have much affect on a street motor but on a high revving na motor it is possible.

Warrick - At work but when I get home I will post a couple of good sites about 3sge/gte models.
I was told yesterday that 3sge (and I presume 3sgte) MR2 motors have a couple of extra oil drains in the head on the exhaust side. This (I'm told) is to prevent/reduce oil flooding problems because the engine is more upright in the mr2 than St202/ST206 etc.
This can be important when converting the 3sge to rwd where the engine will be upright.
Any comments on this?
I'm told that there are drains in the block and it is possible to drill holes in the head to match up with the block if you don't have a MR2 motor?
Does the head gasket have these holes?
Is the MR2 head different from the ST202/ST206 head?

well in the gen 1 range ther are 2 differnet n/a heads
one with yamaha stamped on it one without

basically the one stamped yayamha will have slightly cleaner ports and a diffrent casting methoud makiing tha yamaha head heaver

i have both head and you can have them both free + postage if ya want
they just need guide seals

the gte use the same casting methos at the yamaha ge head
but have a sholder in the port just where the injector is

there are a couple of different ge gen 1 models

the one with the yamaha head is the one you want
this comes with raised compression and slightly more agressive cams
these are apprently 159 hp stock
the rest are 10-30 hp lower depending on the model

i also have a gen 1 gte block if you want that as well
that comes with the water to oil cooler on the front
and the oil squirters

i also have the domed pistons from the yammy ge
they come with flatops on the non yammy head

at the end of the day i dont really know what you aiming for hp wise
so its hard to say
if you want high revs or massive cams your really gunna need to do the buicket over shim coversion
but i guess most of this comes withou saying

this is my observations on the gen 1 and comes from the 30-40 ive pulled to bits and hiffed or fixed
i have a shitpile of bits laying round doing nothing so feel free to have them my partner would love you :D

thats it!
Im gonna setup a 3s site with all my info and pics.
I get bombarded with emails every day, and although i dont mind answering some questions, there are MANY that can be researched on the net or by sweet talking your friendly gasket supplier to compare with.
I have a gen1, 2, 3 and 4 3sge heads in the workshop, and i fink gen2 and 3 3sgte heads.
will build a complete comparison table in the next few weeks.

cheers, guys.
thats a damn good idea dodgy, im looking at doing something similar for the 4age... if you want to match parts with parts numbers/production dates models etc let me know, i can help with that info off the epc. thats my eventual plan for my 4age page, have pics of the parts like rods etc and have their part numbers, production dates and other info so ppl can compare the parts to decide whats best for their application
