Suspension and handling effects

Postby TRDmod » Thu Sep 02, 2004 10:38 am

In a gt4 st205 4x4

I want to know what suspension could do to handling
Lets say, I have fully adj suspension set, I put the back harder than the front, what would that doo, over steer or under steer? Etc, or visa versa, or hard all round, soft all round, or one side harder than the other etc

Thanks
Details please, people with experience, not theories
Have you got the hots? for what's in the box with the dots? ..... 0800 30 40 50

soo many variables..........
generally speaking harder at the rear will promote oversteer.. but it depends on weights etc etc really no simple answer to your question.

are you trying to cure a handling problem? maybe if you tell us exactly what the problem is and how it happens and under what driving conditions some one can help

Same answer as I posetd on NZPC....

with a gt4 st205
fully adjustable suspension,
what does stiffness and softness do to handling characteristics...
like, if i put it really stiff at teh back and softer at the front etc...thanks

i want extreme details if you could please

What are you using the car for as this will have a HUGE influence on your set-up?
Having 'ultra' stiff suspnsion for everyday road use is pointless. The car will simply be very skittish and uncomfortable as you'll feel every leaf and crsip packet to drive over. You only have to look at some of the morons who have stupidly hard springs etc and see how their car handles while driving along a road. It just bounces everywhere. Push it to the extreme (on a closed road!) and it'll probably bounce off into a ditch! Even with the damper settings on hard, you'll have similar problems as they try to keep the tyres in contact with the road surface.
Stiff suspension only has its place on the circuit where the surface tends to be nice and smooth and you don't have to worry about potholes, bumps, etc, etc.
If you go too stiff at the rear, the back end will bounce around too much, especially with the front set at soft. If anything, you want it the other way round given that most of the weight is up front.
Each car has its own characteristics and each driver has their own preference. Your best bet would be to go for an intermediate setting and go from there. Experiment with different settings until you get the car to behave as you like it too.
I drove our Monty turbo in the Targa a couple of years ago on one stage (I was co-driving for the rest of the event) and found the car to handle like a sack of sh*t. I found that there was too much body roll and the suspension settings were too soft. However, the driver loved the handling and how it was set up as it suited his drving style. Different strokes for different folks as they say.
