AE92 Clutch and surging

Postby jacko » Tue Sep 07, 2004 8:19 pm

Hey, just brought a 1990 ae92 levin gtz, and it needs a new clutch bad.
Just wondering if there is anything I should look out for before ripping her apart, and whats the best way - remove gearbox or engine?

Another thing is yesterday (2nd day of owning) it started surging and running like dog bollocks for aprox 2mins (felt like it was missing and then running sweet and missing again in like 10 sec intervals). It came with a little box with 3 knobs sitting in the footwell which Im guessing is some sorta fuel control unit - I pulled over and played with my knobs and it seemed to sort it out - but it couldve been the fact that I turned the engine off and on again - has anyone had this before???? if so whats the fix.

Ive also noticed a sort of buzz noise under the hood coming from around the lefthand strut tower when u touch the throttle (sounds like a relay spazzing out) but i cant see anything or track it down. Is this normal?

Cheers for any help

First thing to do when you get a new would be check/change plugs, leads, fluids etc just so you know where you're at. Idle/surging problem could be something as simple as dodgy plugs or leads

maybe u should talk to the previous owner about the random knobs in the cockpit. And Hrt's rite about replacing basic tune items, plugs, leads, filter, oils, fluids etc etc, depends how far u want to go.

As for the gearbox, its just a matter of unbolting the lower control arms, and knocking the driveshafts out. then just the bellhousing bolts and clutch slave cylinder, fluid line etc.

Leads etc have been done 2000km ago (as well as cambelt) no idea why they didnt do the clutch as well becoz its absolutely poked - (the supercharger light on the dash might as well be a clutch slip light) as well as ecu diagnosis because of rough running - leads were replaced and platinum plugs (have the reciepts). The previous owner didnt know what the twiddly knobs were for either but ive seen a very similar thing on a mates skyline so I assume its the same idea.

- Cheers for the offer of doing the work, but I like to work on my own car

i had a similar little control unit in my old 20v which had been installed in japan. the car dealer thought it was to control the air conditioning, good call buddy :P it turned out to be connected to the AFM, i dunno if you have a map or afm version GZE but it might be this... the reason i mention it is because me and a friend worked out what it was when the car started running like a piece of crap, similar to what you're describing - after we'd been having a fiddle with the unit. we'd turned all the settings down, and left the unit turned on - i usually kept it off cos i didnt know what it was, but my mate had had his sticky fingers in there :)

oh, and as for the clutch, i guess it depends what kind of facilities you have avaliable - but i think you'll find its easier to just remove the gearbox.

Dipstick is on the supercharger (of course) and in the most pain-in-the-ass spot possible (of course). RIght around the back of the SC pretty much against the firewall is where it is, should have a yellow top. So basically stuff your head around the back of your motor (up the top) and look for a yellow wingnut. As for how much it holds, its bugger all. Searching the net might find something useful
