Game over to battery or alternator?

Postby TRDLevin » Fri Oct 08, 2004 8:16 pm

For the past few days my car (92 Levin 20V) has sorta been struggling to start this afternoon went to start and car wouldn’t start,. Jump started it fine, then I get home and leave it say 2 hrs and again it fails to start, does this sound like the battery is game over or alternator?

I'll put my bets on the battery as they don't last no where as long as the alternator. If the battery looks all corroded and well used then its pretty ovious. If it was your alternator then the car would crap out after a long drive, and may display a battery warning light on your dash. Measure the voltage accross your battery with your engine started, it should read over 14volts meaning the alternator is doing it's job :)
My 4AG powered starlet puts out 227rwkw & 12.39 @ 115mph........ YEA RIGHT, Tui.

I'd be saying battery too. If your alternator died then your car would be running entirely off the battery and if it hasn't got enough to start the car then its not gonna keep it running for long. Check you've got enough water in the cells in the battery, check that your alternator is actually charging just incase (car off and having not just been running voltage should be 12.2-12.6ish, with car running should be 13+).

Might be time for a new battery anyway. How long have you had that one in for?
