you need a 1s i think it is bellhousing, that goes from a s series engine to a w series box

I've got a couple of suitable bellhousings that will attach 3sgte to w box. Contact me.
Mounting engine upright... minor mods to sump. Might need to install a drain or 2 in the head to drain back to sump.
I'm in the process of putting gen3 3sge into my rwd carina so call me.

yeah, what do you think is the best way to do the drains Kinloud?

I'm wondering about between 2-3 on the exhaust side run external pipe down between headers..

or, run a passage from exhaust to the intake side of the head...

Getting the exhaust built soon by action dan.
Then will be able to do the drains - hadn't thought about taking the drain around to the intake side...
My plan is to have 3 drains on the exhaust side - probably draining down to the sump past/in between the headers.
I've been told by a guy who raced a gen2 3sge for 2 seasons that -
- on his setup the head held about 2 litres of oil with high rpm running
- he enlarged the sump a bit and on startup it was overfull on the dipstick, he idled it really slowly until the oil level dropped as the block and head filled up.
- in his opinion if he was doing it again he would mount the engine on the same slant as the fwd setup to reduce some hassles.

I plan to run an Accusump as insurance against oiling problems.

hmm.. Neil Fraser reckons that there's no need to do anything on the race cars, and sitting them upright is fine. The oil apparently makes its way down.
he says that a baffled sump is mandatory for rwd up/down setup and he sells one to suit...

interesting huh?

oil return, rwd 3sgte

Postby roly » Fri Oct 29, 2004 6:48 pm

i have been wondering about this,as i had been told before i started putting 3sgte in my ke25 that oil return could be a problem then other people tell you its not i even asked a guy at cylinder head shop and he told me it would be ok. im stuck now i've mounted it straight up. i guess i should do something about it .
so correct me if im wrong, when running, oil doesnt drain very well from l/h (exhaust) cam area and you run drain tubes externally from cyl head down to sump on that side.
do you know how much fraser charges for those sumps, sound like the go if they're not to dear. at the moment i only fitted a 1s sump and pickup

well, i don't think 1s sump has any baffling, so if you do skids you will run bearings.

frasers race sumps, with crank scraper and wings and all the cheese are about $700.

I would baffle up the 1s sump and make sure the pickup sits low enough in it, then you should be ok.

Did your 3S have a windage tray? (like 4age, inbetween sump and block).

sump

Postby roly » Fri Oct 29, 2004 7:41 pm

phew might be pretty cool for 700 but a bit steep for me, like you say i think i'll baffle my 1s sump and use that windage tray, its not in there at the mo cos i just slapped the sump on to sit it in the engine bay so i could make some mounts.
i was planning to strip the motor down and give her a freshen up a bit further down the track so i might have a look and see if something can be done internally about the oil return problem

cool, thanks for confirming 3sge has windage tray :P

Hopefully my flatmate is going to make up a sump for me.
