The blacktop runs VVT in the same way that the silvertop does. It's load, temperature and RPM dependant. The solinoid is slightly different, however it can't actuate the VVT pulley in anything other than an on / off situation.
Yes the blacktop does have a reprofiled VVT pulley, that is because it runs a slightly longer duration intake cam!
The answer is Helmholtz!
