Which supra is faster??

Postby Sinister » Sat Nov 06, 2004 3:57 pm

I am looking at buying an old school supra but confused about the models and which is fastest. So can any one tell me the differences between the 2ltr twin turbo, 2.5 twin turbo and the 3ltr turbo???

any help would be much appreciated.

the 2.5 is a 1jz-gte, fastest in stock form, and easiest and more reliable to get big power from. obviously more expensive than the rest. big power can still be gotten from the other two, 7m being the next in line, and not many people are doing that, so could be good to be different.

hope that helps.

GA70
1G-GTE (2l twin turbo)

MA70
7MGTE (3l single turbo)

JZA70
1JZ-GTE (2.5l twin turbo)

Out of these 3 models I would say it is best to go for either the MA or JZA70 as the GA70 is useless. Not much power and I don't even want to start talking about torque :?

MA70 will be easy to track down a cuple of those lying around. JZA70's are very hard to track down in good condition and a decent price but there is 1 or 2 that comes up every now and then.

Look for the facelift, widebody models 89+ as this the year where the mounts changed. Earlier models have a square shaped mount wich is harder to mod with if you will be looking at upgrading engine etc as later model one's come out with the round shaped mounts.

As for the facelift, widebody part......jst buy one as it looks a hell of allot better than pre-facelift, non widebody mk3's

Pre facelift front looks better though! Body mouldings and wing are the only thing that reeeaaallly looks better on facelift.

TWO turbos on a 2L engine?? Thats pushing it a bit isn't it? Were they rather small turbo's or something?
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Yes they are really really tiny turbo's....CT12's when they were still steel shaft. They switched to ceramic after that with the CT12a wich is found on the 1JZ and is slightly bigger.

It'd be better if you did a single turbo conversion on it wouldn't it? Something bigger would give you HEAPS less lag! Might have a bit less power all up, but more useable power all round

Not on a 1G it won't.....dnt bother spending any money on one as they are a piece of shit motor.

It would be the opposite dude, bigger turbo generally = more lag.

Main reason for twin turbo's is one of them is smaller so it spools up faster meaning less lag, then the bigger one kicks in.

hunt is doing reasonably well with his 1ggte (single turbo)
and lee dobson is also doing very well (his single turbo 1ggte is in a ga61)

They are better suited to lighter cars.

also there are other engines that run 2l turbo

subaru for example.

1ggte isnt as bad as i and other people make it out to be, but its no good in a heavier car.

i had a 89 1ggte supra with pod and big bore it keeped up with my mates skyline with same mods he had more boost (12psi vs my 8psi) and supers are alot heaver. :P
i know of a 1ggte with 400hp on standerd internals 8O the guy races it and it never gives him any problems but saying that if i had the choice i would go for the 1jz

I don't know much about Lee's setup at the moment except that he is running a similar setup to what Hunt is currently using?...correct?

If you add up what Hunt has spent so far in getting turbo, all custom manifolds and all the other costs and weight that up against the power he is making........hardly worth the effort.

If you take all of the money he has spent on his 1G so far you would have been able to buy a 1JZ and surpass the power that he is currently getting from his 1G with really really minor modifications.

And yeah as stated before the 1G is absolutely useless in a car as heavy as an MK3 supra.
