Postby rage » Wed Nov 10, 2004 1:47 pm

hey
puchased second hand a greddy oil temp gauge a few months back. thought i had all relavent wiring etc. i have the sensor control box and main gauge unit. the thing im not sure of is the wiring, there are a few missing wires and plugs

does anyone know a good auto electrician in auckland with knowledge on these type of gauges that will be able to rewire it up ?

this is the product here
http://www.greddy.com/prod_warning_gauges.htm
under oil/water temp.

thanks

If it is the warning type as shown in the link you posted, you should have/need the temperature probe which terminates to a standardish 2 way plug, wiring between the probe and the control box, the control box itself, a breakout loom for power etc, and a wire that runs from the control box to the gauge. While the wiring itself is pretty straightforward, the plugs at the control box are very small and will not be easy to replicate if it is possible at all. You can get replacement parts for any bits that are missing from Advanced Imports, if you manage to find someone there who a:/ can be bothered serving you and b:/ is not a chimp. Even if you get that far you will probably require rectal surgery after they give you a price.

hey, thanks for ur reply
heres what i have

probe which ends in a two way plug.
control box which has the plug to go into the gauge and also another group of wires which to me looks like what connects to the loom

so this is what i need:
a wire from the probe to the control box
and someone who knows how to attach the rest of it to the loom for power etc

just thought that there might be someplace in auckland who has experience with these units and can just different plugs or connect the wires directly, since the small fiddly plugs (from the control box to the gauge) are still there, the sensor plug is a fat 3way plug judging by the looks of the receptor. anyway heres a pic :

Image

.1. is the plug for the sensor i think
.2. im not sure what 2 is... doesnt seem to be a plug thing, maybe a diagnostic port
.3. is the oil sensor plug, the other end of the wire is the bolt u put into the sump

plug between 1 and 2 is to the loom i think, has typical red (power) black (ground) orange (acc) and white (??) wires.

so basically i need a plug from .1. to .3.

ill give Advanced Imports a call but from what you said, they will probably want to sell me a complete control unit etc which is $$$

You are only missing one part of the loom, which is probably the easiest bit to replicate, I would find some small terminals for the 2 pins on the control box and epoxy them in. Then cut the plug off the sensor and replace it with something from DSE or Jaycar.

yup only hitch is that theres 3 pins in the control box going to 2 pins on the sensor

thats the bit thats puzzling me.

This is the part of the loom that you're missing....

Fits into the control box thus....

These pics are for a oil pressure gauge, so while the control box may well be the same, the sender unit may only need two wires for temp - a feed and an earth. If that is the case, then only a red and a black wire will be required - omitting the white use on the pressure gauge.

Have you tried speaking to a GReddy dealer to see if they can supply that part of the loom seperately?

Strange, the middle pin is only used for the pressure meters as Gary has kindly shown above. On the loom you are missing only the 2 outer pins are used, the wires are both black so polarity would appear to be unimportant. Sorry I can't be arsed taking a photo :P.
