Somethings leaking!!!

Postby Lunchie » Sun Nov 14, 2004 3:14 pm

Hey guys I have just brought a gt-4 1990 and ive noticed that sometimes after the engine has been runnin when i go out to look at it in the morning some thing has been leaking from the motor. Its staining the road and it wont wash off with water and it appears to be comming from somewhere above the right front wheel. I had alook in the engine bay and the only things i can see near that area is the brake fluid and power steering fluid containers. Both of these have not gone down dramatically due to the leaking and i checked the oil and coolant and they are not draining eather. What should i do about this/ is it a serious problem. Im taking the engine out in a couple months to get the clutch replaced so should i just wait until then.

WHAT is leaking exactly? have you examined the puddle you leave at all? Is it thick like oil? thin like coolant? red? black? green? brown?

its blackish and i cant examine the puddle because it is soaked into the road by the time i see it. It doest appear to be oil because it doesnt leave a black mark on my hand when i touch it.

park your car on some white paper overnight, then examine the stain in the morning.

so its not grease from the cvboot then?

my wof man told me it needed new boots, and showed me where it had dumped grease all over the place.

That could be it i mean all i know for sure is that its coming from somewhere above the right front wheel and the only stuff i "can see" in the engine bay in that region is the brake fluid and power steering fluid but i spose if some random pipe goes there it could be anything.

I think the guy who i brought it off said some wheel bearing or sumthing was loose and he thought it might be grease but i didnt really hear what he said.

When i think about it some grease is probly the most likly reason since none of the fluids oil coolent etc have gone down at all really.

Check the CV boots and make sure they aren't ripped open. Doubt it would be though cause that grease tends to get flung out when you're driving and is either left on the road or caked up on the car. Couldn't be any number of things though, leaky power steering etc. Doesn't take much fluid to make a reasonable puddle

If it is definately not oil then it will be a power steering fluid leak which is very common on Celica's luckily it's an easy fix because the high pressure hose which bolts in between the PS pump and the pipe leading up to the resovoir is about $90 to be rebuilt from hydralink the only problem is that it's a bitch to remove with the engine in the car but considering you are getting a clutch done soon that is the ideal time to do it. You can tell it it's PS fluid bu the smell, you will know what I mean, it's quite distinctive.

Right ohh ill put some paper down tomorow and run the engine for a while and see what im dealing with but i figured that what ever it is its not major because 1. it doesnt happen all the time and 2. the clutch is being replaced soon so it can be fixed easyly and cheaply then ( i hope ). ALso the last owner said that he had felt a difference between the pressure needed to turn the wheel left or right. Personally i havnt noticed it yet but im a big guy and he was like tiny so maybe there is some difference.

ur shockies spitting?

just another guess, the fluid / gas from them can spit out causing a mess, but not unless they are being used usaully, but ive heard stranger things :)
