Tinny sound from a 3SGE

Postby AJz » Sun Jan 09, 2005 11:00 pm

hey, recently bought a 1989 Celica GTR, and have come to dislike the sound it produces at 3000 or so RPM, it sounds real tinny, almost like a worn out VTEC. I asked the previous owner and he said thats how he bought it. I hav a feeling its the resonator/s

What are the different ways i can get rid of that, bar doing a full exhaust system.

Cheers

I would assume its coming from the exhaust note, not the engine bay. You'll want longer resonators to resonate a longer wavelength. Put more than one in as well but make sure there the same length or you'll produce beat frequencys. A new exhaust muffler wouldn't go a miss either. I'd go offset instead of the current cannon rice style.

Hmmm to be a bit more specific use around 14'-16' resonators and the offset muffler will take out a bit more of the high pitch noise compared to a cannon straight through muffler.

If it's still got the stock exhaust and muffler then it'll just be the stock rear muffler that's making the tiny noise as a few of the baffles have probably collapsed, my ST162 was like this until I replaced the muffler. If it's got an aftermarket exhaust on it then it's either too big, doesn't have enough mufflers in it or a combination of the two.

Ok yeah like I said then it'll be the rear muffler, just get the exhaust shop to replace the rear muffler and please don't put one of those big shiney RPS or similar mufflers on your car like every other boyracer, chances are it'll sound like shit and turn you car into a cop magnet. I'd reccomend a lukey muffler, good price, good sound and still flow well.

Totally agree... no RPS straight through muffler

Though I gave Lukey a ring and apparently Pit Stop are their new zealand suppliers and when I went into pitstop and asked if they had lukey mufflers the guy had a blank stare on his face and took me to some mufflers and said "we've got these ones and these ones and these ones"... so maybe lukey ones are rebranded as pitstop brand I dont know

anyway no straight through... way too loud... an offset or turbo style one will keep it reasonably quiet

so do u think if I just replace the rear muffler, its gonna get rid of that sound. The tinny rattlyish sound sounds like its coming from just below the exhaust headers, could be a hole somewhere? Cos you can hear it more inside the car.

Are you sure it's not a heat sheld? They rattle at about 2500rpm, but you never know.

Yes replace the rear muffler, or even if you want to test my theory, unbolt the muffler from the flange and shake it round a bit and if you can hear what sounds like loose metal inside the mufflers casing than that proves it, that's exactly what happened to me. How olds the wof? I ask because you've just bought it and a car cannot obtain a new wof with an exhaust leak.

when you remove a cat, you gotta put a reso in, if you already have a reso, have 2... trust me ;)

put a turbo in and the tinny noise disappears :) funny that, a large whirling blade is quite a restriction on an exhaust it seems lol.

figured out wat the noise is, the exhaust is lose and not properly held against the chassis, so fixed that, Also the cat is completely shot which is wat makes a tinny sound, o well, least i know wat it is now.

wasnt the heat shield surprisingly.
