AE101 FXGT - 4AGE or not?

Postby pinkcandyfloss » Fri Feb 04, 2005 10:44 am

Hello, forgive my ignorance but we are in the process of buying an ae101 FXGT.
I have just paid $25 for a vehicle check and the engine number is
4A-K392655. I was expecting to see 4a-GExxxxx!?!
I have an ealier model fxgt the ae82 and believed that the 4age was a feature in all the later models too.
Did the engine change or are we being duped and getting a standard corolla that looks like a fx? We are not seeing the car till tomorow when we are picking it up from Taupo.

Please help

AFAIK there are 2 engine types that grace the Ae101 shell... 4age found in the Fx-Gt, and the other which i believe to be a 4afe, which resides in whats commonly stickered as the Fx-Sj

easiest way to seperate the two by looking at them, the fx-gt has all round discs where as the SJ has drums on the rear, also the gt has the twin exhaust from factory, where as the sj has a single with the muffler sitting on the drivers side... (exhaust style may be not a good indicator if its been fitted with an aftermarket system)

I know that in the Ae82 & Ae92 shapes they made something similar to the 101 Fx-Sj that was badged as an Fx-G

hope that helps in some way

If the engine has been changed to a 4a-ge you might want to make sure that the suspension & brakes have also been changed. Also if the engine is different than the chassis plate says, you will probably need a cert. (just if you want to be legal to the letter of the law :)

Quite often the number on documentation shows the number which is stamped on the block. All 4AGE's will have 4A-****** on the block as that is the engine number not the engine code. Id be 99% sure if its an FXGT as said, it will be a 4AGE.

the engine number wont tell you the engine type
you need to look on the build plate
thats the silver tag on the fire wall (not the vtnz one)
it will have model numbers etc on it
under the engien it will have the engine number and code.
it will tell you there what engine it has.
model number for an auto fkgt is ae101-agpvf manual is ae101-agmvf

Heya Distrb, is that all your AE82 does down the quarter 16.6, with those mods, i don't mean to sound like an ass but that is pretty slow for an AE82.
My AE92 in full street trim (sounds, mags) does a 16.5 @ 83.7mph.

thanks for pointing out the blatantly obvious

what mods are you talking about? it is bog stock apart from a lightened factory flywheel, whilst we're declaring the state of play, take this into account....

- full street trim (sounds/mags)
- removed t-vis
- F**ked second gear

i know that you understand what its like driving one of these things without t-vis. im currently toying with the idea of putting t-vis back in to see if it makes any difference to the times. im picking it wont and i just need more time on the strip, but others think it'll make a huge difference.

times will drop with practice, i mean i've had 2 runs on the strip with that car, nobody is a whizzkid straight out of the box, give me some more track time and it'll get better.... theres scope for at least a 15.9 with this setup...

i would ask you to take your ae82 to the track and have a go to make a real comparison and see what you can do with it, but i'll pick that by the time the next meet rolls around it'll be far from standard? so that wouldnt really be a fair comparison

16.6 for an old fxgt that cost 2 fifths of f**k all.....
and only a coupla runs.... id be happy with that.
hell the shot of it leaving the caldina behind on the line is worth the cost of the car to me!!

exactly my point.. lol, im not complaining in the slightest.. i mean how could you when you paid $50 for the car in question...

at the end of the day, im just trying to be realistic with respect to the combination of the car, the minimal mods done, the weight and experience of the driver  and track conditions...
