De-springing

Postby pervert » Thu Mar 03, 2005 12:03 pm

Now before you start on about being dangerous/illegal, blah blah blah...I KNOW ALL THAT...this is purely for research...

If you de-spring the rear of a car, how long are the shockies/tie rods (what else would get damaged?) going to last...
Like if you drove de-sprung daily for 3 or 4 weeks, would it $&#$% a what was, brand new set of shocks?

Any other extreme problems associated with this, bar a pink sticker/crash...

Knowledgeable replies only please.

different cars different lengths.

my levin was on the bumps for a while. broke rear alignment arms twice, so rear wheels were dodgy as fuk.. all fixed now tho with new alignment.. also kills your shocks..

it made wicked handling on flat roads tho, but was a pig magnit.

considering you would be sitting on the bump stops (unless you removed them too) the shocks wouldn't really be moving, so they might not wear out, on the other hand I don' t think they would like staying fully compressed permanently.

The tires would wear quickly caused by excessive camber from the car sitting too low, wheel would be like this /--\.

The tierods would also be at an angle the wouldn't like and would wear out quickly, but if your just doing the rear you don't have to worry about that unless it's four wheel steer.

The bushings will wear out quickly especially if they are already old.

The most likely to be damaged part are your internal organs, have you ever been in a car with no suspension travel? After half an hour you start feeling like a trip to the hospital.

Now before you start on about being dangerous/illegal, blah blah blah...I KNOW ALL THAT...this is purely for research...

If your even tempted to try this it will handle like crap and it's a good way to kill yourself when at speed - I've seen that happen before.

They do travel a bit, obviously when you go over a bump it flings you around, but its at the very end of its travel.
Back in 'nam, we took the springs out of a mates Sunny (the cutties were too short   ) andleft them out for a while, about 6 months  and by the time we put some springs back in, they werent very happy shocks.
Were quite old though, so it probably just finished them off.

When the car has a couple of people in it, it sits on bumpstops in the back anyway cause the compressed springs are so soft, and it's not too bad.

I'm just wondering because I am going to send the springs away to get compressed again, and was just going to drive it raw-dog instead of putting the factory ones back in. It has a brand new set of shorter shocks in it, and I don't want to $&#$% them just by driving around on the bumpstops for a few weeks, thats all.

I know it will ride rough, thats half the fun.

I'd just wait 'til the springs were back before driving it,with no springs if you go over a bump while turning the car WILL go sideways, this might sound like fun but if your doing 100kph at the time and not expecting it all you'll have left of the car is a nice metal cube.

It won't be driven on the open road, I don't need you to tell me I'm going to die/wreck my car. I can find that part out for myself...

I've been in fully de-sprung cars before, and it is not as bad you lot are making out...it just rides rather rough...

Anyway, I think my questions have been answered.

wtf :? Wot sort of car are u talkin about as no car has tie rod ends at the rear unless u have 4 wheel steer !
As for wot damage it would do dont forget the most important thing it will put stress cracks in ur strut towers , which inturn will make ur car un able to ever be warrented agan and will be a write off . 8)
