sideways, engine cuts out!!

Postby TRDmod » Mon Mar 21, 2005 12:49 am

i take corners fast, hairpin corners and close to it...
and my tank isnt full, but theres plenty in there...but the engine cuts out
i assume that the fuel is moving too far to one side and my engine isnt getting fuel cos i dont get this problem when my tank is more than 60-70 percent full but below 30-40 percent full...it does it in extreme cornering...

anyone know what this damm problem is, i wanna get rid of it...anythign i can do..what do i do, how much does it cost, and what does it entail

what kind of tank are you using ?
If you are using a factory fuel tank you should have very little trouble with surge even at high speed corner or sideways.
only alternative to this is to install a surge tank.

yes, im using complete factory stock, its strange cos during really high speed it only happen when my fuel tank is not full, when its full, it doesnt have that problem at all, but when its closing on empty, the last bar close to empty, it will do it....

how would a surge tank help, can someone explain what is happening

EFI sytems need constant high fuel pressure, as you say when youre going round with very little fuel in your tank its sloshing too much and you arent getting a constant supply. A surge tank is a round cylinder 1L - 2L in capacity which when fuel is pumped to the engine it goes through the surge tank. The surge tank is only small so the fuel sits in the bottom of it and cant move around when you go around corners, this will stop the problem. But as far as im aware you need to run two fuel pumps, one to feed the surge tank and one to sed fuel from the surge to the engine. Only way to fix your prob at the moment is to have more than 1/2 gas in the car, unless its another issue like fuel filter??

Its fukcing hard to explain in writing but hope that gives you an idea. Im in the process of making one for my car.

Yeap wou will need two pumps, a low pressure and a high presure. You run the low pressure into the surge tank and high pressure from the surge tank to the engine.

The surge tank will always be full (or nearly) and the feed to the engine comes from the bottom so that there is always a constant feed no matter how hard you corner. (unless you end up upside down 8O )

This is a normal problem when driving hard with not much gas in the tank. Just make sure you have plenty of fuel before driving hard.
Unless you want to be building a race car I wouldn't recommend the surge tank idea... it's a lot of effort and I'm sure there would be issues when getting a WOF.
BTW it's probably bad for the engine when you get this problem - leaning out.

thatd be sweet callum, or would I be better off doing the surge tank thing considering the parts ive already got, ive got a Commodore Hi pressure electric fuel pump, a Celica high pressure electric pump and a K series low pressure electric. Also a mate of mine who is an engineer is getting round to building me one shortly.

what do ya reckon?

a k series electric pump? lol neva heard of it.

i just bought a generic low pressure pump from repco for the surge tank prime pump, and a 3L VL commodore pump for the engine feed. i got my surge tank off a dude on the forums.. cant remember who it was a wee while ago. the only trouble i had with my fueling wen i went for the cert was the fact i mounted it all to the fuel tank backing board lol (which is like cardboard) its still abit rough in there, im hoping to rip the lot of it out and do the boot up with sum wood or tread plate to line it. maybe even opt for a drop tank and flag the whole fuel system iv got and just use a lift pump and a high pressure pump.

surge tank is a piece of piss to setup

i can have my car with the fuel light showing and still absolutely throw it around corners and have no surge problems whatsoever

i highly reccommend doing it if you have these problems

yep there are no problems getting a warrant. don't need a cert

you can buy decent ones just off trademe

not sure who installs them, where are you from?

(p.s it is fairly easy to do it yourself heh)
