SR20DE/T into my AE85?

Postby deinmuter » Mon Mar 28, 2005 4:54 pm

Yo!

Ive been doing a bit o lookin around to convert my AE85.
I mean, I love 4AGEs but still, I would like a lot more power (who wouldnt?)

So, I was considering any of the following engines to convert. If anyone's had done a conversion like this before with any of these engines in a rwd Corolla/Levin/Trueno, please let me kknow the pros and cons.
If anyone has found any links that have done any of these, please refer them to me!
If there are any obvious problems/issues with converting any of tyhese engines into my AE85 bay, PLEASE LEMME KNOW! =)
If there are any other engines that you can suggest, feel free to writte in. (serious suggestions please)

CA18DE/T
SR20DE/T
3SGE/3SGTE (Celica engine)
13b (yes, I know, its a rota)

Obviously, putting an engine into a different chassis will add costs for custom fabrication (engine mounts etc) and more work so please point out these as well!

THANKS A BUNCH

Try contacting markshatchi86 (SP?) on www.club4ag.com. Hes doing an SR20DET into an AE86 at the moment.

Theres a thread in the engines/gearboxes section with up to date pics etc of the build.

go find that vid of the ae86 with the 20b turbo >.>

the vid says *600ps*. So id imagine, it would be a bit quicker than an SR20 :).

and all of those engines are bigger in size than a 3a-u or 4age that is probably in your car at the mo so all of them bar maybe the rota will also require some masaging of the firewall, they are also heavier so further brake/suspension upgrades may be needed before even taking into account the power gains, im pretty sure the sr20det has been done quite a few times so you should be able to find some info on that, and as someone has already said there was the crazy 20b turbo one too so there will prob be a few 13bs done already that you could find info on, im not sure about the ca18 thou how common that has been ?

cheaper engine could be a 1uz from a soarer ? and there have been a couple on here done too,

just a thought as a sr20det and 13b mite be a whole lot more than what i have seen a couple soarer engines go for

sounds like you got the plan in mind man so get into it and good luck

Got a japanese magazine at home with one of the top japanese drifters (2002) with a AE86 with a SR20det in it, he said that he was going to put a 4AGZE turb in it but he said that the SR20 wasn't that much heavier, plus heaps more potential so he went for that.

An S13 SR20DET is lighter than the 4k and 4speed box we took out of Rob's KP61. So we are reducing weight, as well as adding power.! 8O

Isn't the block on the SR20 Aluminium? if so that would be why it is so light.

The whole SR20 is alloy, only the head is on the CA. And the block isn't as heavy on an SR as a CA, it's the bloody great bearing girdle and crank that increases the weight over the basic CA block.
As far as which is better, I wouldn't swap a CA for an SR, I'd just buy the SR to start with!
SR is "better" IMO because of the huge availability of products for it, and it makes big gains thru bolt ons. With the CA, you have to know what you are doing, and hence not so great to bodge. To get reliable power from the CA, you must know what you are doing.
Personal preference really. I prefer alloy over cast, plus there has to be a reason Nissan stopped using the CA way back in 1994?

yeah to go to a timing chain and a dodgy rocker system instead of a cam over bucket style reliable motor, both motors make good power when setup well, i say got a rota
