Gearbox or diff whine

Postby Voodoo » Sun Apr 03, 2005 5:02 pm

hey just wondering if there is audible ways of telling wether a whine is gearbox or diff? ive notice a whine in the driveline since d1 r1 , its sounds as if its coming from the back of the gearbox, but maybe it could be the diff instead, bit of a noob when it comes to this sort of thing  , any quick and easy way of telling? this whine on comes on when accelerating, and goes away when lifting of throttle, but that prob wouldnt tell me much?

i know my old old t50 had a horrible whine in 5th gear, you could feel it through the gear stick

a diff noise generally comes from the rear of the car... :D

prehaps get a mate to sit in the boot and see if they can hear the noise in the rear? i have also noticed on the skyline that the noise from the diff tends to resinate louder than one from the gearbox, prehaps it has something to do with the way its mounted etc

yeah its just that this seems to come from back of gearbox, front of diff area, but is abit to tell from drivers seat, plus the lack of rear seat/carpet might tend to push the noise futher back,

this is more 3rd/4th gear where its the loudest

When does it whine? A worn diff will whine when it has low stress on it at lowish revs, about 1/4 throttle.

Thats what all mine sound like, then when you back off they make a clicking noise then they go bang.

If it does any of that its probaly your diff.

If the whine is constant as you speed up then it will be your diff, but if it comes and goes as you change into different gears then it will be in the box.

Then again if it is whining with the clutch engaged then it will be your clutch release bearing
