4AGE Redtop Engine noise.

Postby shazeal » Thu Apr 07, 2005 4:44 pm

Hiyas,

I have an 89 Redtop Trueno Sprinter, straight through exaust with cat removed, pretty much bog standard otherwise.
When I accelerate between 1k-3k rpm I get a rattling noise from the engine, it will do it at higher revs if Ive just been cruising along and floor the accelerator.
Im hoping someone may have had a similar problem so I dont have to go round and replace all the running gear to track it down.
While at idle the valve gear is a bit noisy but, the rattle is a completely different type of noise, its higher pitched than the quiet rattle from the valve gear.

Only thought Ive had so far is a dirty fuel filter causing the engine to run too lean when you accelerate too hard? But it happens if I accelerate mildly say in 3rd from 2-3k rpm. Or could it just be the valves making the noise?
Ive had a search through the posts here but cant find anything similar to whats happening to me.

Thanks.

Dan.

Exaust noise? About as loud as a Legacy with the big bore exausts. It pops a bit when you shift up gears, or lift your foot off while the revs are above 5k.
Ive rechecked the timing and its dead on.

Im pretty sure i had the same problem with my AE92 Rolla GT.
It made a high pitched but fairly quiet rattle when it first started and was warming up (choke period). In low revs upto about 2400rpm it made the noise getting louder as I revved harder. Then from 2400rpm upto about 5200rpm (all approximate) it was sweet with the occasional rattle but past that it rattled quite a bit.

After trying to figure out what it was meself, took it into me mate and the bottom end was on its way out!

I dont mean to scare you by telling you my story but it got a lot worse because I drove with the rattle so Id get your Trueno into a garage ASAP to get it checked out.

I would say its detonation by the sounds if it. Saying it also does it at high rpm after cruising and that the timing is sweet, could point to a carbon buildup in the combustion chamber causing hot spots.

Using 91/10deg BTDC. Im not worried about the popping noise, just the rattle .
Hadnt thought about the bottom end, I hope it isnt that I dont have time right now to pull out the engine :/

Thanks heaps, purring like a kitten now even the noise from the valves is alot quieter since I filled it up with 96. Hopefully I didnt do any damage running it on 91.
