removing your door handles???

Postby nraged30 » Tue Apr 12, 2005 1:09 am

seen a few cars with this done... think its looks real good!!

just wondering if anyone has done this and how much work is involved...

i assume you eitha u hook up the doors to open via a switch or remote (perhaps in conjunction with ur alarm)...

is this done by a simple motor in a similar fashion to central locking??

curious to shave the locks and handles in my 26...

any info would be good :)

Ive seen it done and considered doing it to my old mini once, however, dont quote me, but Im 99% sure you will need to get it certed(if, in fact it can be for a road going vehicle?).
other than that you can either go electric or manual. Manual ones usually involve a hidden button, & the door being slightly spring loaded (sort of like a bonnet) elecric similar, obvously without the button.
have a look at american hot rod magazines, Ive seen afew articles on conversions to them over the years.
Cant believe im still a member here.

You still have to keep an external way of opening the doors in the case of an emergency. So you need a push button hidden somewhere connected to a solenoid that can kick the door.

Apart from that, weld plates over the old door handle spaces, bog/sand/smooth/paint over, and then run an electronic solenoid that will kick the door when voltage goes to it, either by button/remote, or both.

WOF manual refers only to being able to open from the inside, no requirement for opening from the outside. However any modification requires cert so see what your certifier is happy to let you do.

i wanted to do this a couple of years ago and I was told by someone at the LTSA that in no uncertain terms the door must be able to be opened from the outside, because if you crash and pass out people wont be able to get you out. Seems ridiculous to me, and I have heard of people finding ways around it

ive done a few cars now,
the easiest way is to have a linkage up thru the window sill and a mechanical push button, as long as you can lock it with an alarm

certifiers have different opinions on this matter, as i found out its best to find one who is genuine and will tell you what you can and cannot do.

i found dave critchley sp? at tokoroa automechanics the most helpful.
