Also keep in mind mate that due to the nature of the internal combustion engine everything you do is a compromise. If you opt for smaller primaries with 4-2-1 extractors and a smaller exhaust system, you will gain low down grunt at the expense of high rpm horsepower. Same thing goes with cam, head work, inlet system, etc. This is something alot of manufacturers have been trying to overcome for many years, with systems like Vtec, Ford's Broadband Manifold system and more recently BMWs extremely cool Valvetronic engines.

As far as timing goes, I have little experience with these motors but my crappy 6 cylinder Falcon can run 28' timing with similar combustion chamber pressures to your Toyota engine and only pings on occassion. Your 4AGE has the advantage of a knock sensor so I wouldn't hesistate in trying out 22+ degrees with some quality fuel.

on 96 fuel a silvertop will ping at 10deg. so a small port wont be far behind it.

using the knock sensor like that isnt a good idea, best to have it set so it ALMOST sets it off. knock sensor should be a fail safe, not a tuning tool. and as fivebob has pointed out some sensors switch off under certain conditions.

by this you mean.....

i am beggining to think that what i am after is near impossible in a small engine without sacrificing high end power :?

teh only waht to increase tourque thought the intire rev range is to increase displacment

so get a 7a bottom end and have a 1800cc 4age maybe thats what you want ??

I found that on my AE86 with redtop block and bluetop head, give me heaps of low down torque! And that's with the std 4-2-1 exhaust system with 2" all the way back. and running TVIS. I'm still using the std bluetop ecu so no knock sensor for me :P running on 20degree timing without shorting out any terminal. and run on BP98 gas. very torqueky down low!

I change the exhaust system to 4-1 and notice a huge torgue lost down low :? Not too sure if I gain much up top, cos haven't got the car out on the track yet. But I got it dyno and got 85kw at the wheel... and that's with a dirty air filter.
I play around with the SAFC and lean the top up abit because it was pretty rich and i got 80KW. :? but then I just change the air filter to a aftermarket stainless filter mesh and i got back 85kw. :!:
So now I set back the top rpm as std in SAFC and only run stainless air filter on track and that should give me 90KW 8)

So yeah, for ur case, maybe u want to try run a bluetop head on ur motor and run bluetop ECU so u can active the TVIS :D

If your wanna get to higher revs faster then your flywheel thoughts would help. But it won't help with the launch.
You could sheds some pounds from the car. That would help.
Does you intake have a resonator? This'd be a container hanging off the side of the intake tubing... If so you could try replacing the current one with a bigger one. I have no idea if this'd actually work, but I've seen a bit of information that suggests it would...

NA Drifter> is that a bottemend off a smallport-redtop-4age?
Did the extra compression alter the air/fuel ratios much? and were the air/fuel ratios still ok when you advanced the timing?

try throwing some bluetop cams at it

240°

7.56mm

9°BTDC

(Stock -max lift @ 111°)

51°BBDC

(Stock -max lift @ 111°)

Stock 4AGEU used on AE86 and AW11. P/N Intake 13501-16010. Ex. 13502-16010. Some have found good power setting the maximum lobe lift for the exhaust at 100°BTDC and intake at 100°ATDC. For more bottom end power retard the exhaust 4° and advance the intake 3°. For more top end, advance intake 4°and exhaust 3° from stock settings.

from club 4ag

always worth a try but if u or anyone you know isn't any good with a dial gauge and vernier cam wheels forget changing the max lobe centres and just fit them to stock marks
