Superstrut Corolla's??

Postby XSVTOY » Fri Mar 25, 2005 2:30 pm

who owns one of these and what do you think of it... handeling wise? I would say they drive much nicer than a normal Corolla....

Does any one know anything bout common problems with these.....

I have a 1992 FXGT Superstrut, owned if for 6months and its always having problems, mainly front Struts crapping out an bushes, Ball joints and the most forward controll arms... parts are always hard to find too....and cost lots..... $1000.00 for new strut trom toyota?? not that i have brought one... Ive spent close to 2grand on repairs for mine.... no engine problems just suspension

once you replace them with genuine parts they will last ages.

those prices are incorrect, either ask them again or email me. ill sort you some.
NEVER rebuild them or use aftermarket ones. they last 6 months if ya lucky

id say superstrut owns non superstrut hands down.

(just a little off the side, but do all superstut come with 2 piston calipers, and all non superstrut models come with 1?)

super strut arms retail for about $185 + GST from toyota.
I haven't found an aftermarket suplier that does superstrut arms. Everbody like appco/repco, autolign etc all sell the genuine arms. i guess for that reason, that they only last 6 months.
To anybody out there, If you're looking at buying one especially an ae101, dont. save yourself the hastle and $ and just get a normal one.

Yeah if you drive it normaly not hard into an out of corners etc u should be ok for suspesion parts for a few km's yet, mechanic a toyota said before 160km u should hav changed or replace most suspesion parts etc

I have had a bit of fun on the Rimutaka Hill (between hutt an wairarapa) got a pretty quick time.... the guy i brought car off neva looked after it im guessing thats why csot lots in repairs......

Yeh ive got one of these aswell and when i first brought it it never handled overly great. Hoisted it up and it was cause the superstrut needed replacing. Heaps of coin later and its all fixed and handles like a dream and is good as new. I would keep it if i could afford to but now my GSR takes priority :P ie want the money for mags and mods :P

Hey I've just bought a new import 1996 BZG done 89,000 Km's, what should I look for with regards to the SS suspension to determine if there are any faults with it ?
I also inherited the engine with a nice hole under the oil filter at the number 2 cylinder where the conrod has decided to make a hasty exit.
Any-one know of a blacktop bottom end for sale ? Done around the same K's ?
.........or anyone tell me what it would take to use a silvertop bottom end and mount the blacktop head etc on that ?
any help would be great......thanks

My AE101 GTZ has done 140,000km now. Done engine, rack, starter etc.
Super strut suspension is great, im running Tein springs on KYB struts.
No wear or noises in my suspension.
If it doesn't fit, force it.
If it breaks it needed replacing anyway!

Righty ho then, seems like we have a bit of a pickle here.

When I worked for Shock Absorber Services in Auckland, it was one of my jobs to rebuild these notorious super 'slut' joints. Pain in the ass things they are. Did about 5 per week. Used to take me bout half a day and we used to charge $135 + gst a joint. And theres 4 of those buggers on a car so it gets pretty expensive.

I have heard various stories bout how people this that s/s handles better than macpherson strut types but having owned both types I cant really say wat was better. I only advantage I found with the non s/s was that it was easy to obtain and cheaper to get aftermarket coilovers for them. They could be fitted with AE92 struts and you just needed to adjust the brake brackets.

And a little advice for people buying complete 'genuine' arms from the likes of REPCO, BNT etc. Those companies generally buy them in from TOYOTA at a cheaper trade price and sell them off to the public at a higher retail price. Its the same with alot of parts these days and has been happening for many years.

Cheers.
