Pull off the sump and get a nut welded onto it.
Or put it in the sandwich plate if you have one.

I'd say after the cooler. If you're wanting to know oil temp then you really want to know what oil temp is actually getting to your engine aren't you?

thats what i thought at first, but then i thought, surely its more important to know when its getting too hot?

so thats why i thought before the cooler would be best.

But yeah just seeing what the general consensus is first

Id go with before the coller aswell, as that will be the temp of oil INSIDE the engine, not cooler oil thats about to be heated again.

That would be my suggestion.
I would want it to show the temperature of the oil in the sump.

What's your gauge reading range? I got a remote kit on my AE86 and i put the sensor before cooler(rx7 FC3S oil cooler). I just got a water temp gauge as oil temp gauge which will read max 120'C.
Normal driving is ok which only about 70 max after a long day, but on the track, 120'C is not enough. :? gauge just max out so i don't know the actual oil temp.
I got a proper oil temp gauge now which will read up to 170'C but haven't replace with the one on the car.
Was thinking to use the 120'C gauge for after cooler and 170'C gauge for before cooler....but then i'll have too much gauges on the car... :?

Just for FYI, oil from sump goes to oil filter then to the rest of the engine. So putting guage after cooler maybe is a good idea since you then know what oil temp the engine is running and how well the cooler is working etc. But then you don't know the oil temp after engine. engine oil start to fail at high temp, i forgot the range.... :?

fair enough

well when you think aobut it
if the general temp of oil is lower, the reading you will get is generally lower as your engine will also run cooler, whcih in theory, it does not matter where youut the temp gauge cos its all relative, it might be temp a when it comes out of the engine at the sump, and temp b when it comes through the oil cooler, but when it re enters the engine, and heatsu p to a certain degree, it will heat up to what temp B is starting from and increase according ly, if you can cool the oil to room temperature everytime, iw ill also increase accordingly....

thats what i was told....
monitoring the temp is best done at the sump though cos you know exactly what the engine is running at
