bluetop: idles fine, wont rev... map sensor? *update*

Postby gmacrae » Mon Apr 18, 2005 7:53 pm

Hi guys, long time no see.

Basically i've got a little ae82 fxgt runabout, just did the head gasket (took bout a month lol), put it all back together, got some professional help to make sure the cam timing was sweet, car starts perfect, idles perfect, just seems to run out of fuel when i touch the gas pedal.

any ideas? cheers

Gene

Cheers man, didnt think of that. I tried it, but no luck, its exactly the same, so i spose it looks like the tps is ok. The map sensor is the big 19mm plug in the intake, with kinda like a 40mm long ?finger? that sits inside the intake right?

the connection to that is fine

the car does allow me to build the revs up slowly if it's not being driven (ie just revving in the driveway). Initial throttle response is very delayed but the revs will catch up after a couple seconds. Does not have the power to move the car tho.

timing

Postby andyztouring » Mon Apr 18, 2005 8:54 pm

Almost sounds like the timing is out, double check the timing of the cams and dissy.

Check your fuel filter as well. Almost sounds like its starving - getting enough fuel for slow rev buildup but can't supply enough for fast buildup. Could also be the TPS position is out but don't know what it should be set to!!
See ya

sounds pretty much like what my problem was. i replaced cap rotor leads plugs module coil, god, almost everything... turned out to be the fuel pump. had a blocked pick up... looked like a used teabag. put another pump in, VROOM. worth a look.

big ups guys, cheers for the replys, it looks like andyztouring was on the mark tho... i twisted the dizzy round to as far advanced as it would go and it got a lotr better, so i pulled if out, advanced to the very next tooth and it runs 'well'

It's perfectly drivable now but its like it's too advanced. The dizzy is set as far back as it will go (least advance), but it's hard to start, like its trying to turn against too much compression/advance. and it idles around 1100 rpm warm with no vac leaks.

So now im confused because i had the dizzy off a few times to check that i didnt accidentally advance it more than one tooth round. So on the 2 dizzy settings ive tried, i've basically got way too much advance or nowhere near enough.

Is there something im missing?

thanks again - Gene

Use a timing light. that way you will know how advanced it is. jumper the diagnostic connector and set the timing to 10degrees and set the idle around 800rpm. should go ok then.

My money is on the exhaust cam not being timed correclty. Hence the need to adjust the ignition timing. However now you have a different lobe seperation so the engine won't run anywhere near as well as it should.
The answer is Helmholtz!

I don't mean to point out the obvious, but I don't think it is possible to get an unmodified 4AGE cam timing out of wack (unless you do it with your eyes closed). The cam wheels are interchangable and the timing marks stick out like dogs balls.

Worth checking though, cos if it was ok and if the dizzy is close to being right, then wiggling it round a bit and using a butt dyno should be all that is required.

Thanks guys, the "professional" has the car again today, im severely lacking in patience and experience when it comes to this sorta thing :-/

Redmist and PC, cheers, it's either right and something else is out (ex cam), or its not right.

Ill let yaz know what it ends up being - Thanks again
