turbo bag??? .... curious

Postby TRDmod » Fri May 06, 2005 12:43 am

i buy magazines, such as speed, auto car, nzpc and rev,... yes im a freak....i do BUY then:) as they ahve great specials nd novel products and stuff,

anwyays, i saw a turbo bag, ... turbo bag??
it says, keep your turbo hot, so it spools quicker and it dont cool down.......
ok ok, let me get this right, heat is our enemy right, if my turbo is so hot, ........ thats not good.....hence why we have oil to cool the turbo, not just to lubricate, hence why we have turbo timer to slowly cool oil after a hard run or a run......

but to put a insulating bag, to .... kep the heat in??

any feedback on this....
Have you got the hots? for what's in the box with the dots? ..... 0800 30 40 50

Have you heard of exhaust wrap,

Presuming you have or this wont help you.

Exhaust wrap comes in a roll like tape.
Think mof the same material, but made into a bag that goes around the exhaust side of the turbo.

My thoughts on the reason are,

To make the turbo spin faster sooner you need to flow a higher volume of ar through it. Volume is the key.
By keeping the heat into the exhaust gasses you keep them hotter and therefore the same amount of gas takes up more room ( bigger volume of space) than if it had cooled down by many degree's.

So hotter gas, has more volume, makes your turbo spin faster sooner.

Maybe not the best wording to explain it but you should figure it out.

Anyone want to pick holes in my explanation?

I read about turbo bags on other forums like the silvia forum and some people reccomend not using them unless you have lots of money to rebuild or replace your turbos because the bag will not just make the exhaust housing hotter (which is what Matt said) but will also make the core run hotter aswell.

From what I understand from other forums, you don't want the core to be overly hot since this will accelerate the wear on rotating parts, and if the core gets too hot it will increase the oil temperature since oil is constantly flowing through it at high pressure. You want the core to stay relatively cool, hence the introduction of water cooling.

Some drag cars use heat bags on their turbos but they only do 1/4 mile at a time and probably wont experience as much heat related wear on the turbo as if you have a heat bag on your turbo over a long journey or in stop and go traffic on a hot day.

a turbo bag for road/drag use will be fine.

I'd say because there would be more heat created from curcuit use as the turbo would constantly be spooled at high RPM.

With street use, you wouldn't be spooling the turbo in the high RPM range much and with a 1/4 mile, it would only be for a very short amount of time.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.
