strange noise from 4A-GE bluetop

Postby RickGT » Thu May 05, 2005 11:10 pm

i have an 84 fx-gt and ever since i got it it has been makin a few weird noises, but its got louder, its really loud when its cold but when it warms up its not as noisy but still noisy enough to annoy me, it seems to be comming from the left hand side, its not the waterpump, my mate said it could be the a/c pump, (all a/c hoses have been stripped, just bare pump) any help would be great

Noise

Postby GOLDAE86 » Thu May 05, 2005 11:19 pm

Take the A/C belt off and start the engine, if the noise is still there, remove the Alt belt, if noise is still there, take it to a workshop for them to have a listen :D

if its on same as waterpump (must be diffrent from 4A-F :? ) just take it off to test if that belt is the cause. Could be bearings in altinator etc too. Just take one belt off at a time to see if the noise goes away. WHen you find which belt is causing it look deeper into the accessories on the belt. Also try giving the belt a good wirebrushing.

would removing the cat be any help, im afraid that its going to be to loud, thats y i was thinking of leaving the cat in there.

Mine makes bit of a rattle when cold, sounds tinny, not like a bearing but one day I'll get round to finding it.

I've got a 2" with 2 large reso's and a straight through muffler. Sounded like a fartbox honda with only one res in so put the second one in and it has just the right amount of growl.

noise

Postby JasonZE » Fri May 06, 2005 10:46 pm

Double check the bottom crank pulley bolt is tight and the pulley is not broken. (I have seen a few with loose pulleys)
Otherwise good advise above remove belts to eliminate noise and diagnose the problem.
And if noise still there with no belts go to mechanic as it could be a faulty cambelt tensioner 8O

i have checked alternator and waterpump and a/c pump, none of these are making exsesive noises, ive come to the conclusion that it could be the dizzy, as the Orings are stuffd cause it leaks oil, could this be ratling around making the noise, because it seems to be comming from around there
