box swapping

Postby Lunchie » Sat May 14, 2005 5:37 pm

Hey people im thinking of getting that gts25t as shown in the general section but ill be converting it to manual.

Ive talked to a guy who did the conversion of a mates r32 and apparently the gts25t box is a far bit more pricey than a normal gtst box.....

he suggested to me that i would be able to simply use a r32 box in the r33 but warned about upping the power too much incase the box didnt take it.
All i ever intend to do to the car is a 3inch zaust and i nice cold air intake... stock boost is all good.

So im just wondering what sort of power you r32 owners are able to run through your manual boxs and whether you think they could take about 280ish flywheel horse power which is about what the r33 will make with its mods all done.
Thanks

The R32 box will handle 280hp at the fly no problems as that that's not very much horsies to start off with.

32 box should work fine if you only plan on changing the zorst and intake and running on stock boost. Wether it will last though will aslo depend on your driving style.....are you going to be thrashing it, do burnouts, race it etc etc as this might ware the box out or munch the synchros after a while as that's what happens to all boxes...

On the bright side I think they will bolt straight up to the RB25 out of the R33 as they are still RB motor but I'm not 100% sure wether the housings change over the diff models.

I know in Toyota motors normally if you use a box out of a motor and put it on the same motor just a later generation then it normally bolts straight up...

I also do these conversions and am doing a mates at the moment. It is advisable to get the correct box as second hand skyline gearboxes haves been thrashed into submission as it is and it would not have a warranty of any kind if you use one which is not for the job.

In short use an R33 gearbox as it will know what the deal is

Yeah, R32 boxes do fit, but its' hard getting a good, genuine GTSt gearbox, as they're either thrashed, or non turbo/Holden gearboxes. GTSt gearboxes have webbing all over the casing and bellhousing, GTS Skyline gearboxes have webbing on the casing, but none on the bellhousing, and Holden boxes are just rubbish, unless they're off a 3L. They all have RP71C #1 or #2 on them, its' damn hard to tell them apart!

I'd say if you have the coin, get a proper RB25DET gearbox, although, you'd be better be sitting down for this one..

And thats just the box and driveshaft! Then you have to source a clutch pedal, lines, master cylinder, and a manual brake pedal if you don't want to cut down your auto one. Then get a flywheel, a decent clutch, a manual crossmember (if you can find one!) all the random bits a pieces like bolts, oils, shifter surround.. I'd say, you wouldn't be on the shy side of $3000 with everything, using proper 25T bits and pieces.

So to summarise, buy a factory manual.

ring all nissin in wellington they do manual conversion for 32 and pretty sure they could make one for a 33, i also no that they just got in a complete r33 gts25t manual, so have the right box for u, but they may want a bit for it, but they do have 32 manual boxes around aswell.
