short shifter isnt short?

Postby phatman3801 » Fri May 20, 2005 9:47 am

i just got my old shifter out and compared to a shortsifter a purcahsed from driven perfromance it was listed as one for 1993 corolla onwards, on thing is when i compare to the orignal shifter it seems near identical! correct me if im wrong but i shoft shifter works by the pivoit point being move so from the pivot ball it shoud be longer than the orignal right?

well the distance between the pivot ball and the linkage mounting should be shorter, perhaps you already had one?

yea, I had/Have this same problem...

Brought one from FBI it was exactly the same as the factory one I removed the only dif was it was missing the two pin holes half way up it so that little spring/ball latch thing couldnt be installed onit, mines still on there coz it was such a bitch to pop the plastic links on I couldnt be stuffed taking them back off, emailed FBI about it and they just offered a store credit if I returned it (I havent since im in ham)

One of the Palmy guys had this problem the other day too...bought a short shifter off JRS, and when we took the old one out, the "short shifter" was actually longer.

you mean longer as in longer throw im guessing, now longer load arm (like it should have)
all I can think of is... do nanna rollers have longer throw than the sportyer versions of the cars... so the short shifters been sold are made for the nannas?

No, longer as in the shaft ABOVE the pivot was substantially longer than the factory one, and the shaft below was identical length.

redmist: who?

phatmna, if you cant afford a proper one, make one, all you need to do is extend the lower portion of the lever and space up the mount the same amount....

what does the shifter look like, (pic if possible), do the linkages come off the bottom of the shifter (below the pivot) or above the pivot, but yeah any fabrication shop will be able to make one up with a spacer for you, and you may as well modify the factory one while you have the "short" shifter in, then return the short shifter.
