No air filter

Postby Caveman » Thu May 19, 2005 11:46 pm

I just bought a car and it turns out the airbox was empty, no air filter, and the vent going to the airbox was also disconnected.

I've got no idea how long its been like this.

What are the negative effects of this?

I know if things like rocks get in there they can damage the cylinder and rings.

I was wondering why the engine was so noisy lol

Any advice? Apart from getting a filter...

filter aside,
change the oil
then again, if you just got the car, do all the fluids- can never really tell when they were last done!
could also clean all the pipes going to the intake...they could be dusty
Cant believe im still a member here.

This happened to me when I bought my ae92. Probably because it used to have a pod filter on it and the dealer had tried to make it look standard again.

Depends on how long it was without one, and what kind of conditions its been driven in, gravel roads etc. Should be ok though.

Just do what ae92typex said.

Yes, provided it has not been driven on too much gravel, it should be fine. I've run multiple cars without airfilters, some for over a year, and haven't seen any adverse effects really, except on the one that got driven on gravel lots...

Took off the intake up to the throttle body to find a thick sludge sitting at the bottom.

Looks like this weekend im taking off the manifold to clean it

Should be all good. I'll post up the results from a compression test

Yup is it a black ae92 levin http://forums.toyspeed.org.nz/viewtopic.php?t=31315. I think it belonged to Fandango before the owner I got it off.

I've been too lazy to do a compression test... plus its raining

I've just cleaned the TB, the pelunm looked good so we didnt bother with that. Ran some power up through with some new oil then changed it again.

...Oh and got an air filter for it
