Surface rust.

Hello I have some rust sports appearing so want to get to them quickly. got holidays coming up so plan to get rid of any surface rust I see.
Would I sand down to metal, then bog to smooth, primer then paint? Or is there another way to do it?
Any reccomendations on bog/primer/sanding tools/grades to use would be very helpful as well as any rust preventer than can be put down.
For the paint I will just go to the local paint store and get a colour match.
So just after tips, or a breakdown of what to do, what to look out for etc. don't want to stuff it up and want to make a good job of it.

best tool I have for getting rid of surface rust is a wire brush attachment on my angle grinder. Aslong as its not in a small space it saves heaps of time over sanding. Otherwise your on the right track just dont leave it primer to long or the rust will come back

Thanks yeah I have been told a wire brush is good. Also been told to put some rust preventer on the metal? then primer? will paint as soon as the primer is ready. Any reccomended products to use?

I always use one of those wire brush type attachments on a drill, Use 'Jenolite' on the metal afterwards to nuetralise the rust (prevents it from coming back) Then, primer it and paint.

Youll find a wire brush on your grinder/ air tool will go way harder than a drill I use a small die grinder for hard to reach places. Some kind of rust preventative is good I cant reccomend a product as I use some stuff my dad gave me in a old paint can. It works real well and smells great too

Agreed when you have it sanded down rust kill it (unless you cut it out). Just dont let it run because it stains.
