Caldina turbo wined up

Postby beerad » Tue Jun 28, 2005 2:22 pm

with the calinda GTT it seems to spool up right from low revs in comparison to a WRX which boost comes on all of a sudden. can anyone tell me the reason for this, is it the waste gate regulating boost?

The turbo on the Caldina I'd say is probably a little bit smaller than the one in a WRX wich is why it spools quicker.

I don't know much about the WRX turbos so I can't really comment too much on it but that would be my guess...

If we are playing a guess game...

I'd guess the WRX you are comparing it to is running more boost, so it feels like it just comes on in one hit because it packs more of a punch.

from what i am aware, the difference in rush is helped by the length of the turbo manifold,

WRX = very long, Caldina = short
Horsepower is NOT proportional to the cross sectional area of your exhaust tip.

I'm assuming the WRX has a td05?
My 1800 bpt motor has a td05-h on it, and it kicks in with one hell of a punch.

both the caldina and the wrx are stock standard. its just the way the turbo comes on, the caldina tapers up to full boost wear as the WRXs boost comes on all of a sudden at 3000rpm

A combination of things will make the subby appear laggy:
Low 8.0 compression,
High peak boost rate around 1 bar i think
possibly larger turbo
and quite possibly a better vvt setup on the caldina...

yeah it makes for very different drives, the WRX is extremely aggressive on-boost, but the caldina feels more like my dads bmw 330i a controlled touring car.

yer in the subbies ive been in they are a fericious lil turbo like the vf23 on sti's etc, and yer the wrxs come both in VF turbos and td05s!

Like my mate has an STi wagon thats pretty darn fast, hes running 18psi and my rolla only running 13..UNTUNED, and my turbo takes a lil while longer to reach full boost, he only just pulls on me, and when we chop 3rd mine is laggier and he gets the jump!

just overall they are quite consistent boost lil turbos, because also for instance, wat is standard, cause evo's and subbys cum out with all sorts of different so called "standard" boost, my mates STi is stock standard apart from just filetr exhaust and bov, no boost tap and he gets 18psi stock! so the caldina, not that i know is prob like 10 or 11 standard anyway? so not as much power going through, hence not the more "boostier" feeling of the wrx

18psi IS stock peak boost in a V3 onwards STi

Why do they feel different? They're two very different motor and turbo combinations! And is the Caldina turbo ceramic?

Yeah that's what I was going to say all STI model's come out running 17-18psi Standard.. My mate's 87 WRX RA ran 17-18psi and hit boost hard but after boost had hit had nothing at all..
Different set up's hard to compare..

the point of my question was, is the caldinas ecu tapering boost on to ensure a linear dilevery of power, so it doesnt surge, or is it just different set up do different things

I think the answer is most likey the later of the two..

Im runnign a TD05/6 turbo on the 'dina and i now get a lot more sudden power delivery - lot more *bang* and shes on boost - like my old evo4.... I would argue the manifold and turbo are the manjor contributors to this phenomenon - ive left boost the same at 1 bar...
