Soarer Manual Convertion

Postby jzz30 » Mon Jul 25, 2005 7:17 pm

Hey guys im new to the forums and was wondering if i could some information on what is required to do a manual convertion on my 1991 Toyota Soarer.

I understand that you can use the r154 gearbox or any of the W series gearboxs. The W gearboxs seem to cheaper and resonably strong so i think ill go with that option.
Could anyone tell me if the bell housing bolt straight up to the gearbox
(W series)??? The manual 1jz-gte bell housings seem to be quite expensive so i was wondering if i could use my auto bell housing and modify it for the slave cylinder to fit.
And also what pedal kit do i have to use?? and what modifying do i have to do to it (if any).
If anyone have any of the parts that im goin to need and willing to sell them eg. gearbox, master cylinder, slave, pedal ect.

If any one could arnser any of these questions for me it would be muchly appreciated.

Cheers.

I have done the conversion, reasonably easy to do but is unavoidably $$ if you want to do it properly.
It is possible to modify an auto bellhousing to suit the W box but I used a genuine bellhousing from a 2jzge, I personally don't think its worth mucking around when the right parts are available, by the time you buy an adapter and get it welded up it won't be such a bargin.
mount, driveshaft, slave etc all easy, shifter you can modify (need to start with a rear shifter Wbox), get a steel flywheel machined up.
pedals prob best to try genuine or you can modify altezza, supra etc.
Niteb has alot of this stuff and i think you may find some of it on trademe at the moment, I've shopped around and his deals are pretty sharp.
It will cost you somewhere around $2k if you can do alot yourself and depending on clutch etc. Sounds like alot but its very worthwhile, it transforms the car 8)
jz manual stuff is very expensive but you get what you pay for, easy to certify and very strong if you get good stuff to start with.

I bought my bellhousing from niteb, its a brandnew, genuine toyota item, i paid $750 for it.
clutch - I have been running a 9.5" clutch with a heavy duty 3sgte cover, full face, sprung centre plate. This has held on very well, and is smooth in engagement. The only downside is the pedal weight, to be honest its fairly heavy, but when the option is a paddle clutch to stop slip, a heavier pedal is worth it for the smoothness.
Ive actually got my soarer it bits at the moment and am going to trial a standard clutch in there - my main driving is through aucklands rush hour - and Im going to see if a lighter pedal is worth the decreased strength when racing (which realistically i don't get much time for)
cost - from maybe $300ish for something standard to well over $1k for a multiplate setup, I'll let you know how the standard setup goes but chances are I'll have the heavy duty cover and plate up for sale if you're at all interested pm me.
