SW20 servicing?

Postby RS13 » Sat Jul 30, 2005 1:52 am

Hello.. I'm almost definitely getting a particular non-turbo SW20 once I've sold the cef.. and it has done 110,000kms, yet to have the 100km service. I'm going to do the cambelt, other belts, waterpump etc.. do I really need to drop the motor to do this? Or is it possible to squeeze in there to do it?

And it may also need a clutch; (bear with me, I've never owned an MR car!) Do I have to drop the whole shebang out, or can I just crack the box out? If its' a huge job, how long would it take? Just trying to get an idea of what its' gonna cost me all up with kit + labour..

Cheers fellas!

What can I say, I get paid too much! lol.

GTSt has gone, finally.. selling cef.. trying to get down to one car is hard! I've always liked SW20s, but my better half hates them, so I thought I'd get one anyways. I wanted a turbo'd MR2! But I'm aiming to be a poor student soonish, just trying to get into my groove with something I like, rather than something "practical with 4-doors"!

And yeah, the SW20 will be number 40.. :D

When I had my motor dropped out for cambelt/waterpump/clutch/turbo/downpipe/gearbox oil/fitting electronic boost controller, it was 16 hours all up. That including the mechanic breaking 3 of the turbo exhaust studs and having to remove them  plus making a bracket for the downpipe. 16 hours @ $45/h :)

You dont need to drop the motor to change the cambelt or the clutch.

Oh really? So I can just drop the suspension on the gearbox side, drop the driveshaft and get the gearbox out by itself? Thats awesome! :D

I dropped the motor out to do clutch and cambelt, but did a few other things too like rear main seal, cam seals crank seal, rocker cover gasket, tensioner and the tensioner roller.

There might be a few funny angles to get to some gearbox bolts if you leave it in, but its do-able. And the cambelt can be done with it in, you have to undo the left and right engine mounts and lever it a bit. Still a tight squeeze though.

If you're going to be doing the clutch and cambelt, then I'd recommend all those other things I mentioned as well.
The water pump is something else I'd add to that list. I was going to do mine, but when we dropped it out, we found it was near new and left it.

My advice: If you've got mechanic mates who can give you a good price on labour, drop the engine out and do all that stuff. Will make working on the motor so much easier.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.
