Strange clutch slipping incident

Postby aesc » Wed Aug 17, 2005 1:20 pm

Hi,

The other morning I was driving along and when I floored it in third and the clutch slipped anything above 3k rpm. Great, Ill need a new clutch I thought. When it was slipping, there was this slight scrapping/graunching noise 8O

But when I drove it in the afternoon, it had stopped slipping altogether, and has not done it since :?

Thing is my GF was driving it the night before and shes not the best in a manual, so was riding and slipping the clutch a bit, nothing REALLY bad though.

So why did this happen? Anything to do with the womans driving? It seems a bit weird because I still have plenty of clutch pedal travel left and usually you know when you clutch is about to go and this was pretty unexpected.

Any thoughts would be good

Cheers

Maybe thrust bearing not moving back/forth properly?

That's the only thing that I can really think off.

Yeah could be that... Its a bit noisy too when idling out of gear, fair indication will need replacing next time.

Well by the sounds of that I'd say it will most probably be the thrust bearing...

unlikely, but also could be a slightly leaking oil seal. only takes a little on a clutch to make it slip, but when burnt off appears ok again. Had that happen to me in an older car I worked on.

Strange...when I changed the motor in the Supra and put the box back on there was a fair bit of oil on the flywheel and it didn't slip once!!

Ae92typeX would an oil leak however slight it may be, be causing a graunching/scraping noise though? I can understand the slippage at times but that clears up pretty fast but I don't get how oil could make that sort of noise? :?

G/F driving may have glazed the P/P or F/W. Giving it guff and it slipping/graunching may have roughed the clutch up getting rid of some of the glazing letting it grip again?

Quite right, quite right. If anyone shows me a non wornout clutch slipping because of an oil leak and making a graunching/scraping noise I will give them all the money in my pocket (warning...Im a super poor student :) )
