AE101 questions - newbie

Hi all,

I've stopped modding my turbo monster (which now sits in the garage) and bought a facelft AE101 Trueno 20v.

Wondering if any experts here can help.

1) is the facelift silvertop any better than the earlier ones?
2) do black top extractors fit and are they really better?
3) is there any way I can remove the air flow meter without spending huge money on aftermarket ECU systems?
4) can the stock ECU be chipped? (I heard Toyota ECU's are CPU)
5) what size exhaust is best on one of these?
6) what does one of these do down the 1/4 in stock form?

That'll do for now, i aim to build her into a club car/hill climber so any help appreciated!

1) Differences are subtle, and are in the intake manfold. It is supposedly better
2) best thing to mod on the extraction system is the 2-1 section through to the cat, good gains to be had there.
3)No, Aftermarket ecu is your only option
4) No they cant be "chipped" as such. Some tuners do a plug in replacement (TOMS; SARD) but those are hard to find. Mr Revhead did some dyno comparisons with both the factory computer and SARD plug in replacement
5) Some say 2.5" others will say 2.25" depends who you talk to and their experiences. i'd say 2.25 is where its at.
6) ive seen stock ones do a low 16sec pass.. and i've seen other stock ones do a low 15sec pass.... so it depends on the usual factors of drag racing.

My new toy is dead stock but feels like a mid 15 sec car, I really love the handling. I think it has potential but the ECU will have to go!!

I really want open throttle bodies and the ability to swap cams, etc

I once came to one of your Taupo track days and had a great time..........but that was in the turbo GTR monster. I think a guy called Ken was the organiser - top bloke

Really enjoying some NA action now, the GTR is awesome but its not someting suited to the tight stuff!!

Hey man

1: Facelift silvertops have better intake manafold by far, have the slightly better 2-1 the same as blacktop (better than 91-92, and a 80amp altinator over the 60 on 91-92, they also have a better ecu.


2: Blacktop extractors bolt right up and are slightly bigger in the 4-2 section

3: There is a map ecu like SAFC's that will let you run map iv just got one and iv been offered another for $500 when they cost 1k new www.performancemotorresearch.co.nz pm me for email addy if u want.

4: hard answer... I have a sard ecu in mine so does another member but there isnt many of them around... hard to find.

5: 2 resignators 19" long and a N/A muffler 2 1/4 pipe (factory) or 2.5"

6: facelift ones prolly mid/high 15's (dont quote me onit)

to run map i reckon spending a little more on a fully tunable ecu woult be worth it. especially if you plan further mods.
look at costs and benefits. it really depends on your plans.

im currently looking for more SARD ecus etc. but dont hold ya breath, they are rare.

I have my eye on some blacktop 4-2's so will have them on next week.

What kinda power at the wheels should a stocker make? I had a B16A Integra once and it ran a 15.3 with just exhaust and headers. The 20v should make 100kw's at the wheels??

Have some aftermarket springs for now, cant seem to find any coilovers yet so that will have to do.

I am so impressed with the chassis though, the car feels like it almost gets up on 2 wheels when cornering hard.............I think i'm gonna enjoy this car on motorkhana's, etc

Keep me posted on your mods guys, there's alot to be said about NA power - after spending years building the Skyline the nimble handling and instant throttle response it very enjoyable!

Feel free to post pics of your engines/suspension - i have alot to learn about these cars! Could have bought a Honda but I like the idea of building up the under dog.............my dream is having a 1.8 Beams engine with 6 spd from a Celica, it would be the ultimate Type R beater.

Wonder if anyone's done this yet??

A facelift silvertop that was stock iv seen put about 89kw down on a dyno with some better fueling an exhust should push it up abit, if ou wanna beat a type r just slap gze pistons in and turbo

btw its my b-top extractors your bidding on :p only reason im changing is iv got a expensive set

ohh and if you want 6speed .... BZ-R gearbox

Just a question about the ECU's how can you check if its been modified in the vehicle ( sorry not trying to jack the thread or anything )

if its been done by some one like TOMS or SARD, itll have their stickers/plates on the outside of the ecu

My old facelift had 93kw at the wheels with just intake and exhaust, don't be fooled into thinking you need big power to run good times. I ran a 14.7 at 94mph with 93 kw's and springs on street tyres and a couple of 14.8's at slightly higher trap to back it up

Wow those are pretty respectable times indeed, I just fitted some Trust springs lastnight and am gonna buy some black top headers off acesniper - then fabricate a nice exhaust.
