ae82 vs ae92 ?? HELP??

Postby rowan » Sat Aug 20, 2005 2:14 pm

Ok guys first i'll give you my plans.

After owning some quick ass escorts and cortina's i have decided to start on my new one. 1968 2 door mk1 with some mean plans.

So i've sold up the other ones and now own the escort and a mitsi mirage.

The mirage sucks ass, big time, so i will be selling it to buy an fxgt as my racer/everyday car.

I am currently working on a 20 vavle blacktop with jasma extractors, tom's ecu, trd leads and sparks.

1st what mods should i do to the engine while its in my garage?
trd headgasket, rods? flywheel etc etc?

2nd which of the 2 models of fxgt should i buy?
the ae82 which looks cooler, and is lighter, and can be rusty?
'or the ae92 which is heavier uglier, but is supposedly a better car?

Obviously the blacktop will get the intake and exhaust all sorted once its in the fxgt, question is which one to get?

any comments or help much appreciated.

The blacktop has a standard compression ratio of 11:1, so you probably wouldnt want to be increasing that if you intend to run pumpfuel.

The conrods rods are a known weak point in the blacktop engines, so if your going to strip the engine down it would be worthwile replacing them with a set of silvertop rods and ARP conrod bolts.

The blacktop flywheel is the lightest factory 4age flywheel, so if you intend to go lighter youll need an aftermarket one.

It all really depends on what you want from the engine and how much you have budgeted.

As for the car. If you get an ae82, look very carefully for rust. Check the floor pan where your accellerator foot sits and the same spot on the passenger side, The 'a pillars', below the tail lights, the bottem of the windscreen, top of the boot, etc

budget is somewhat low i guess, i quite like the idea of silvertop rods etc, the trd headgasket will slightly raise the compression?

in terms of the changeability of parts and suspension and brakes etc?
what differences are there in the two?

i also have the 20v blacktop what sort of gains is there to be had using the silvertop rods etc and how much more power can be gained through an after market set of cams?
as for the fx it sounds like its going to be pretty fast good luck.

for a daily driver my pic would be the ae92.

also for a daily driver id keep the b/t stock.
if wanting to be hard on it id rebuild it with silvertop rods and ARP rodbolts.
i wouldnt use a TRD head gasket, the compression is high enough stock. especially if using a TOMS ecu as chances are its got pretty wild igniton advance and b/ts struggle on our shit fuel as it is.

hmm interesting, would there be any gains with the silvertop rods besides strength? would i be able to set my redline higher with these rods and rodbolts? if i dont raise the compression what other steel headgaskets can i go for.

also with the above mods in a ae82 or ae92 what sort of 1/4 miles do you think are capable?

the other thought was for something real tough the semi forged 4agze pistons? do you think this could be an option, or is it pointless for N/A?
