Slutty High Beam

Postby Ash » Wed Aug 24, 2005 3:11 pm

I've got a 93 Corona. Now the high beam won't work.

Low beam, the lights on full go fine, when you pull it back so that you can flash the high beam, it goes, but when you push the stalk forward so the high beam stays on it just turns the lights off.

I've had a look at the fuses (well mmm, boost did) and everything seems fine, all the connections around the light stalk seem fine.

Just to clarify, high beam when pulled back to flash works, low beam works, but when you click high beam on the lights turn off D:

Any ideas?

Well if they work on both high and lo beam (ignoring how you set it on whatever), then id say its to do with the switching unit itself.

Check your bulbs, i think when on high beam only the high beam filamint lights so if that is gone you might just need to replace your bulbs

Thats what brad suggested and i've done that, so yea, I think it might be the switching unit.

Spose my best bet would be to take it to a auto sparky?

well, this is what i was thinking before raza.

but he said pulling the indicator lever (high beam) back turns high beam on, which, on some cars (i may be wrong) turns both filiaments on.... but you cant say it turns high beam on when the bulbs dont get any brighter...

thats why i think its the switch, and the chance of blowing both high beam filaments?

Munsta, steal an H4 bulb from another car in your household, and check if it is infact the bulb.

which i doubt it is...

True true.
That would be me trying to do two things at once while i'm at work...

I once had something similar to this in my old fxgt and it turned out to be dirty contacts in the assembly of the stalk which turned high beam on.
(mine were the other way around though so i had high beam or nothing which was a pain in the ass)

I'd agree since you say 'high beam when pulled back to flash works'
this suggests the bulb is fine, so its almost certianly something in the switch unit. Its possibly fixable if you take it apart thou

my mr2 does the same thing occasionally, when you flick the stalk back, do it harder than normal, it works in the '2 :D

munsta its easy, pull the column cover off, pull the switch unit out which will b a couple of screws and a plug, pull the cover off the switch unit.

locate the contact which turns on the high beams, easy to do just re-inact the motion of switching the high beams and u will b able to see. get sum contact cleaner or sum wet and dry and just clean up the contact area, also wouldnt hurt to clean the plug up abit. then just plug the switch unit back in and see if it works.
