dramatic oil drop :|

Postby FrEsH » Fri Aug 26, 2005 12:12 pm

hey guys,
i got a starlet GT and i recenlty changed the oil about 2 or 3 weekends ago. Oil is definately not leaking from anywhere yet when i went and checked it today its gone form full to somewhere between full and half 8O
I'm getting quite a bit of oil coming out of my BOV also, and when i leave the car to idle for say 2 minutes or so, i start getting billows of blueish/whiteish smoke out the back but when hte car is drving around its sweet no smoke whatsoever. its holding boost etc perfectly as well.

what do u reckon guys?

My moneys on a seal in your turbo, i've seen an old bluebird doing the same thing. Turbo Fills with oil when stoped/idleing.

Yup...it's the seals most probably. That blue smoke coming out is burnt oil.

How many kms has it done? Could be leaky valve stem seals as well?

What grade oil did you put in there? and was it different to what you were putting in there before? If you are using too thin oil, a quick fix would be to put some thicker oil in.

If it's a definitely blueish colour, then would point to oil being burnt in the combustion chamber, ie leaking from valve stem seals.

If it's whitish colour, then would point to oil being burnt in the turbo housing, from a turbo seal. The oil coming out of the BOV would indicate this as well.

Erm, the seal between the compressor side of the turbo and the bearings (oil area, whatever its called, where the shaft is), if that was leaking, the exhaust would be blue (leaking into intake trapt, and into combustion chamber, this would also explain the bov leaking oil).

Possibly valve stem seals, but id lean towards turbo (from valve steams, to inlet manifold, possibly through I/C as well, to bov?, thats a long distance for oil to travel, when air flow is in the oppisite direction)

If its on the exhaust side, the exhaust will be a whiteish colour, as said by i think vvega or fivebob, if you drop a few drops of oil on a hot plate, is it blue?, no? excactly :P
